NMB Chamber names Waterway Furniture May Legacy Business

The North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce that Waterway Furniture Company has been selected as the May Legacy Business of the Month.

Waterway Furniture was founded by the late J.B. and Josephine Livingston in May 1956. The business has operated continually for the past 63 years. The current owner, J.R. Jordan, first started working at Waterway Furniture as a salesman at age 19. He was fortunate to be able to purchase the business 12 years later from the Livingstons.   

J.R. laughs when he recalls his pay when he started working at Waterway Furniture. “I was paid $25 per week plus a 5 percent commission on all of my sales,” he recalls. The business has grown to now employing nine staff members.

Waterway Furniture attributes the longevity to the company’s honesty and providing excellent customer service and treating each customer with respect and courtesy.

The Legacy award is given in memory of Cecelia Campbell, owner of Surf Beauty Spot in Cherry Grove Beach. Mrs. Campbell was the sole proprietor of this salon, which was the first in Cherry Grove. The business was open from 1966 until she retired in 2010. She earned her Certificate of Instruction in Cosmetology from The University of South Carolina in 1987. Cecelia’s talents were many. She enjoyed decorating and making floral arrangements that won numerous ribbons at the Driftwood Garden Club, where she was a charter member. Cecelia served as president of The MLC Shrine Auxiliary in 1970 and was BPW Career Woman of the year in 1972. In 2004 she became a benefactor of the North Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad. Cecelia was a charter member of Chapel by the Sea, where she regularly attended church. Nothing could compare to the love she shared with her family, friends and husband, Horace Campbell
