By RUBEN LOWMAN

Local middle schools around the county are playing in the inaugural HTC Middle School basketball Championship.

Taking place from Feb. 1 through Feb. 11, the first three rounds of the tournament will be played throughout the county at the middle school of the higher-ranked team.

Both the girls’ and boys’ basketball team’s final game will be played on Feb. 11 and will be hosted at the high school of one of the four teams competing in the championship game.

Similar to the HCS Middle School Football Bowl Games, the HCS Middle School Basketball Championship was created and implemented this season to add more excitement and a higher level of competition at the middle school level.

“We wanted to create more excitement for our middle school athletic programs,” said Jason Cox, Horry County Schools District Athletic Director.

“HTC is an outstanding supporter of our student athletes and athletic departments throughout the district each year. Community support is a vital part of our athletic programs and HTC has helped us provide the needed equipment to our student athletes through their continued support.”

The first round of the tournament was played on Wednesday, Feb. 1, for the girls’ basketball teams and Thursday, Feb. 2, for the boys’ basketball teams.

In the boys’ bracket, Green Sea Floyds was defeated by Whittemore Park in the first round, with both North Myrtle Beach and Loris receiving byes. They both will hold their second round games at home this Tuesday, Feb. 7. The Chiefs will face off against Whittemore Park and the Lions will take on Conway. The winners of those games will play each other on Thursday, Feb. 9.

The boys’ championship game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 12:30 p.m.

In the girls’ bracket, Loris was defeated by Whittemore Park and North Myrtle Beach fell to Conway in the first round, with Green Sea Floyds receiving a bye. The Trojans will face off with Whittemore Park at home on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

The girls’ championship game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m.
