Emily Pendleton Hughes

Emily Pendleton Hughes, 49, of Little River passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2019, from metastatic breast cancer.  She was born on Dec. 16, 1969 in Atlanta, Ga. to Pamela Permenter and Jonathan Patrick Hopping.  She was married to Kevin Mooney, who predeceased her in 2002, and was subsequently married to Kevin Hughes, her husband of seventeen years at the time of her death.

Emily was an excellent wife, mother, grandmother and aunt.  She loved her family, especially her two sons, her granddaughter, grandson and her three nieces.  She was the ideal of motherly love, and her hugs would warm the soul and make the day better for all who received them. She was known as Gigi to her grandchildren and Aunty Em or Aunt Murry to her nieces.  She was fascinated by nature and spent much of her life enjoying the outdoors.  She took long walks, collected shark teeth and fossils on the beach, rode waves on her body board and played tennis with her family any time she could.  Emily saw great beauty in the world around her and would capture much of the beauty she saw with her photographs.

During her lifetime, Emily lived in Georgia, South Carolina, Illinois, Texas and Arizona.  She never let her job define her identity, yet she worked in many professions, including the airline industry, direct sales, real estate paralegal, property management and the service industry.  She traveled throughout the country and returned to South Carolina in 1997 to raise her children and lived here for 22 years until her passing.

Emily loved her dogs and was passionate about wildlife conservation, especially sharks.  Following her diagnosis with cancer, she participated in many events to raise money for cancer research and to raise awareness about the disease.

Emily is survived by her husband Kevin Hughes, her sons Trace Mooney and Kevin Mooney, her granddaughter Summer and her grandson Aiden, her mom and dad Pamela Pendleton and Trois Pendleton, and her father Patrick Hopping, and her brothers Jonathan Hopping, Trois Pendleton and Matthew Pendleton.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, May 7 at 5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in North Myrtle Beach.
