Music celebrity Bill Pickney of the Original Drifters celebrated his 75th birthday on August 15, 2000 in North Myrtle Beach.

Beach music event still being presented in O.D.

O.D. Party 2000 was produced by MiDog, Inc., and Water Dog Promotions featuring such greats as Bill Pickney & the Original Drifters, Billy Scott & The Prophets, Miss Janice Barnett, Clifford Curry & The Sugarbees, The Flamingos, The Del Vikings, Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs, The Tams, Barbara Lewis, Shirley Alston Reeves & The Shirelles, The Showmen, Subway and the Marvelettes.

Skipper “Water Dog” Hough was the founder of this historical beach music event.

He started his career in Myrtle Beach in 1958 with Johnny Parks.  Judge John Breeden sent him to Ocean Drive to work as a lifeguard for Buck Garrison in the early 60’s.  He worked there until 1965.

“Water Dog” also worked at The Beach Club for Cecil Corbett, at The Pad for Donnie Christenbury, built The Barrel for Buck Garrison in 1966 and served a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1967-68 in the 173rd Airborne Rangers.

He was a USC graduate and an original beach boy who loved Ocean Drive.

Today, Mayfest has replaced this event with Mickey Hough, wife of the late “Water Dog”, producing the Mayfest event.
