Sean Poole M. Poole, the artist, said, “I’ve long said words are my paint. Now pictures tell my stories. Inspired by a wide variety of influence from fine art to underground comix, I mix media and materials to develop a style I call Surreal and Symbolic Absurd Expressionism of Narrative Kitsch.

 Canvas and paper are the stage upon which I tell my tales. The act of painting is the performance. The resulting image is a record of the act, an impression of an expression of experience, imbued with one meaning for the artist and containing an entirely separate significance for the audience.

I hold allegiance to no particular school or philosophy of painting. In the brave new online world of digital high definition where image is appropriated, co-opted, manipulated and agenda driven, I strive in my paintings to eschew the conventional, discard conformity and abandon rationality in favor of absurdity, nonsense, chaos and comedy.”

Séan M. Poole was born in New York City and raised in Southern California. He has traveled from border to border and coast-to-coast most of his life. He writes books, poetry, plays, scripts, short stories, magazine articles, advertising copy, press releases and artists’ monographs.

He is a writer, a musician, an artist and an award winning author and director. He worked in a wide variety of esoteric jobs and pursued several careers in order to support himself as a writer. He was a voice-over artist, a major market radio personality and an independent writer/director of short dramatic and educational videos. He produced, directed and performed in everything from classical commedia del arte to live action-adventure stunt shows. He is a published poet and the writer/director of  ‘No One Ever Told Me That’, an award-winning, bilingual educational video.

Poole is the author of “GATTORNO: A Cuban Painter For The World”.  The bilingual fine art biography, published by Arte Al Dia, is the culmination of 10 years of passionately obsessive study and research.  It was awarded first place in the Fine Art Genre at the 2008 New England and London Book Fairs and won the 2009 Eric Hoffer Award for Excellence in Independent Publishing.

“Words Are My Paint” is his first book of poems and sketches gleaned from an assortment of notepads, journals and clipboards spanning four decades. It was published in 2012.

In 2014 Poole entered the studio and began exploring his own artistic ideas.   It was a natural progression following years of immersion in art history and art theory while researching and writing the Gattorno biography.  The writer, having fallen under the influence of a wide variety of artists and artistic schools of thought from the Cuban Vanguardia to the New York school, was compelled to abandon pen and paper for brush and canvas.

Collectors began purchasing his work online in July 2014. In December 2015 he received a commission for a painting to be used as the cover illustration for the book, “Push Monkey”, the second novel by writer Ray St. Louis. In November and December of 2016 two small format works were featured in an exhibit, “Small Works”, at Artspace 506 Gallery in North Myrtle Beach.
