Facebook is buzzing about the Loris Police Department (LPD) who observed a naked man on the side of the road near Church Street. The officer stopped and spoke with the man and then drove off. A video is reported showing the man standing in what looks like he is wearing nothing at all.
Lt. Williams with the LPD stated that the officer immediately reported to him after approaching the man in question, stating that the man was wearing a skimpy thong covering the parts of the body which would be considered indecent exposure. When the officer spoke with the man, he explained the ordinance in Loris which does not allow inappropriate attire and asked the man to put some pants on. The man voluntarily compiled with the officer’s request, therefore no action was necessary.
Williams stated that the man was from Indiana and was in Loris to protest and to clean up garbage from the side of the road. The officer reported to Williams that the man was pleasant and apologetic and covered himself then continued to pick up trash.
Indecent exposure is when a person intentionally exposes private body parts in public, whereas inappropriate attire would be exposing the buttocks in public and when approached by officers of the law either comply with the ordinance and cover the exposed area. If they do not comply they will be taken into custody.
Facebook is receiving giggles and laughs over the video that has gone viral, but the LPD would like for residents to understand the situation was handled. Williams said no one reported the man to the LPD. It was an officer patrolling the area and spotted him cleaning trash, spoke civilly and all is well.
Williams says that the law enforcement in Loris is here to help the citizens follow the laws and to assure the safety of the residents. Bottom line is, follow the laws using turn signals, making a complete stop at a stop sign, obey the speed limits and please cover up.
