Recently Oakboro, N.C., honored their heroes. This came about as a promotion spearheaded by Renee Poplin with the Oakboro Fire Department honoring the men from Oakboro who fought in World War II. Sgt. Wilson Hatley served in the United States Army Air Force as a crew chief on the B-24 bomber. His plane was named Frankie Ferocious. They flew 98 missions during World War II. His son, David Hatley of North Myrtle Beach, was in Oakboro recently and had his picture taken near his father’s banner in the town.
