The Lady Chiefs volleyball team continued their winning ways in 6AAAA conference play with a 3-0 win over Darlington last Thursday at the Chiefs gym. The Chiefs continued their excellent play last Saturday with a second place finish in the Wildcat Invitational Tournament in Lexington.
The Lady Chiefs win over Darlington was highlighted by, as coach Alex Sing put it, “a combination of great serving and near flawless attacking” as they overwhelmed the visiting team.
The Chiefs began the match with a 25-2 rout in the first set as Darlington struggled to return serve and when they did get a return, the Chiefs were ready to slam it back for the point.
The Lady Chiefs followed their first set win with 25-17 and 25-4 scores and their fourth conference win.
Anna Rabon led the Chiefs with 9 kills on 12 attempts and Jennings Hall and Jordan Berger added 7 kills apiece. The Chiefs combined for 14 aces on serve in the three-set match.
Last Saturday the Lady Chiefs left early in the morning for the trip to Lexington High School, site of the Wildcat Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The Chiefs took second place once again, the second straight weekend that they have reached the finals of a big tournament featuring some of the top 4A and 5A lady volleyball teams in the state.
At the Hub City Classic two weekends ago the Lady Chiefs lost to River Bluff in the finals. This time they met River Bluff in the semi-finals and came out on top 2-0 (25-22, 25-18).
The Chiefs eventually finished 5-1 for second place, starting with a 2-0 win over White Knoll (25-16,25-13), followed by a 2-0 win over Westwood (25-10, 25-23). Then the Chiefs beat Eastwood 2-0 (25-16, 25-19), dispatched Greenbrier 2-0 (25-18, 25-16), beat River Bluff but then lost in the finals to home team Lexington by a 2-0 score (21- 25, 23-25).
“The finals was a hard-fought final match. Next we have a region showdown with Hartsville on October 1. Both of us are 4-0 in region play and the winner will take sole possession of first place,” Coach Alex Sing said.
