The Horry County School Board has filled the vacant District One seat. The seat has been filled by W. Russell Freeman, the senior pastor at Little River United Methodist Church on Highway 17 in Little River.
Russell Freeman is a graduate of both Wofford College and Emory University and has served churches around the state of South Carolina including those in Loris and Little River.
He was sworn in during the school board meeting on Tuesday night.
Freeman is the father of three children in Horry County Schools, two daughters who go to North Myrtle Beach High School and a son who attends the Academies for Arts, Science and Technology. He is very involved with both their educations and their many extracurricular activities. He stated that “My children have been very successful in the school system and this opportunity is just another way for me to give back.”
In his interview with the school board on Monday, Nov. 11, he mentioned that teacher retention, class sizes and preparing students for the ever-changing workforce are the issues he sees to be most pressing. Freeman sees his new role as a school board member as a “chance to serve and be involved in the community in a way that can be most impactful. It’s a great opportunity to get to know the teachers, students, the administration and the great people of the Horry County School District. I look forward to serving.”
Freeman will serve through the year 2020. He seeks to serve all in Horry County and the District One area in the most effective and impactful ways.
