On Nov. 19, Cathy Threatt, an English teacher at North Myrtle Beach High School, presented to the Lions Club about the 15th annual Christmas Angels celebration. The Lions Club generously donated $300 to the Christmas Angels fund. Donations are needed to replenish the account from last year.
The two hurricanes last year drained the account, but it was money well spent. This year the students at NMBHS have adopted 180 children (60 from each of our local elementary schools). Children along with parents/guardians fill out a wants and needs list that the students use to purchase gifts. Students raise roughly $100-$120 per child to provide the necessary items. Needs are purchased first as children need jackets, socks, etc. Wants are purchased with the remaining money: legos, games, etc.
The celebration for Christmas Angels takes place over two days. This year on Dec. 13, students will shop for gifts at the North Myrtle Beach Walmart and then head over to Ocean Drive Elementary for a wrapping fiesta. Wrapping goes until late in the evening, but it is lots of fun watching teenagers try to wrap Christmas gifts; although a few do have a knack for it. Saturday, Dec. 14, there are three parties (one for each school) where the adopted angels come and unwrap gifts with the high school students. The parties begin at noon and run throughout the day. This celebration is not one to miss. Hundreds of high schoolers have signed up to adopt, and it is wonderful to see teenagers working to help our community.
