Loris Middle School (LMS) invited women to come to the school for the 100 Women for Lunch program on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 10:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Students from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades invited parents, grandparents or a strong woman they know who has encouraged them through the tough times as well as the easy times in life.
Principal Shelley Todd welcomed parents and spoke with many at their tables as the parents and students sat down to eat chicken, green beans, yams, rice and a roll. Robin Stevens Baczkowski, who works in the middle school office, supported a sixth grader to lunch; Vanessa Gause, coach for the AU Basketball program, supported several students sitting with them to have conversation and good food.
Eighth grader Jabarius Cook had five strong women come to eat lunch with him. The ladies were excited and are Cook’s mother and his five ‘aunties’. They filled the room with laughter as they visited with one another and ask how things are going in school. Two of them traveled from other cities just to visit their nephew and bring the additional support to his life.
So many happy students visited with their moms and grandmothers, this program encourages strong role models for students. Also they show they are involved in their child’s education and school activities.
Teachers and staff served the meal. With it being Ash Wednesday many students had Bojangles meals of fish sandwiches, fries and a drink. One seventh grader said, “It is Ash Wednesday and we are not allowed to eat meat like beef, pork or chicken so we eat fish sandwiches.” This was an interesting fact to learn while visiting the school.
By count, there were over 100 women who visited LMS for the lunchtime visit with the children. LMS holds this event every year in the spring for women. In November close to Veteran’s Day they serve 100 men for lunch.
