The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs varsity football program advanced to the 2nd round of the South Carolina state playoffs this past Friday night with a 34-22 win over the Wilson Tigers.
The Chiefs (8-3) faced Region 6 foe Wilson inside the Hank Hester Sports Complex on the campus of North Myrtle Beach High School in a game that flipped the script of the October 6 game in Florence, S.C. That game was played after a 29 day layoff, with just 4 days of practice due to Hurricane Florence and snapped the Chiefs regular season win streak at 17. The Chiefs were looking for redemption Friday night and found it on a muddy field in front of a large home crowd.
North Myrtle Beach took their 2-play opening drive 67 yards for the first touchdown of the game. On the second play from scrimmage, senior quarterback Cason McClendon passed to Derrien Holmes for a 55 yard touchdown. Kicker Zane Smith added the extra point to make it 7-0 with less than a minute ticked off the clock and the home crowd cheered in appreciation.
