The North Myrtle Beach High School varsity basketball teams traveled to Wilson High School last Friday night, Jan. 6, to open the 6AAAA region part of their schedule.
The Lady Chiefs opened the game with a 9-6 lead after the first period and a 19-10 advantage as they went into the locker room at halftime. The Chiefs let the Lady Tigers back into the game in the third period, as Jaden Berger had the only basket in the period, and the Chiefs and Tigers were tied at 21-21 at the end of three periods.
The Lady Chiefs then held on to win their first region game 32-31. Faith Farmer led the Chiefs scoring with 8 points. Ty Woodard had 7 points, Maddie Vereen 6, Kristin Livingston 5 and Berger 5 points. Janiya Swinton scored 11 points for Wilson.
Coach Brooke Smith-Vereen was glad to get away with a win.
“We did a great job in the first half. We couldn’t score in the third period, struggled to get the ball in the hoop and Wilson got a few quick threes. We managed to pull it out in the end with a free throw by Faith Farmer,” Smith-Vereen said.
The boys varsity didn’t get the same result in their game. They met a Wilson team coming in with a 12-3 record and fell by a 53-44 score. The Chiefs now take a 6-8 record into a home game with West Florence on Tuesday, before traveling to Hartsville tomorrow. They take on a 7-8 Red Foxes team that opened their region play with a two overtime loss to South Florence.
The Lady Chiefs meet the Lady Knights, coming into North Myrtle Beach with a 7-6 season record. They won their first region game at Myrtle Beach last Friday.
