The hydrology study has proven to be helpful in determining what the water and sewer department director, Brandon Harrelson, will focus on to prevent major flooding.  Last year residents on Forest Drive were disillusioned by the devastating flooding and destruction of their properties from the back-to-back hurricanes last September. Daisy Elementary saw a change in leadership at the beginning of the school year. Josh Todd welcomed students and staff as the doors opened for the first day of school for the students arriving on Monday, Aug. 19. He began his career as a classroom teacher at Aynor Elementary School and transitioned over to Palmetto Bay Elementary School as an instructional coach. Todd then moved to Kingston Elementary School as assistant principal. Last spring he applied for and accepted the position of principal at Daisy Elementary School. Early Sunday morning, Aug. 25, darkness veiled the entire city of Loris. First the electrical power dimmed lights starting at 2:15 a.m., the power completely went out minutes later. Lights throughout Loris were out, traffic signals were out. The street lights lining Main Street from Broad Street to Railroad Avenue were illuminating the street and stores. Hardee’s, NAPA and the convenience store at Board and Main had emergency lights shining inside the buildings. The generator at Hills Grocery Store was running keeping the power to the freezers going. The Back to School Bash held at the Public Safety Building on Walnut Street on Saturday, was more of a success than expected.  The goal was to provide 180 children with a book bag filled with school supplies.  They gave out 110 book bags and 130 HTC bags filled with supplies listed on the Horry County School District website. On Sunday, Aug. 11, the children’s Christian group called the Sonseekers presented an early Christmas program at the 11 a.m. service at Dogwood Hill Baptist Church in Loris.  The Sonseekers presented a country bumpkin Christmas play about gathering together to celebrate traditionally with family and friends, but to also remember the true meaning of Christmas marking the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Loris Police Department visits the Capture Inc. summer program as their campaign to get out into the community to share with children. They are friendly and ready and willing to help.  Officers Bobby Brush, Keith Massey, Steven Brodey and LPD Chief Gary Buley played kickball with the children.  Each child was given a police officer badge sticker they wore proudly with excitement. 

The city of Loris spotlights employees each month for their hard work and dedication to their job and to the city of Loris.  For the month of July four employees were recognized with a certificate of service. Featured this month are Detective Eric Stevens, Crew Leader Sean Bennett and heavy equipment operator Harrison Ravenell. Stevens has dreamed of becoming a police officer from childhood and accomplished that goal in 2008, two years after graduating from Loris High School.  He surpassed his goal through promotions from road officer to Corporal Stevens in 2017 and Sergeant Detective Stevens in 2018 becoming the …

The city of Loris hired an interim city administrator after hours of interviews with the mayor, council members and the city attorney. Dennis Drozdak was introduced at the council meeting after an executive session to discuss personnel issues. Drozdak provided a brief history of his experience and stated that he will begin his duties as interim city administrator on Monday, Aug. 12.  “The first thing that I will focus on is the audits, or lack of,” he said, “and second on my list is the financials.”  He said his top strengths are to receive input from others to make an …

Loris High School Football Head Coach Jamie Snyder along with the other coaches, Brandon Day, Lang Kenlaw, Josh Stevenson, Andre White, Julius Graham, Casey Davis, Michael Buffkin and A. Grady, have worked throughout the summer with the Loris High School varsity and junior varsity teams to prepare for the fall football season.  In preparing for the season the South Carolina National Guard visited to work out with the team.  This year’s quarterbacks for the Loris Lions are Gage Conner and Joseph Flesch, both are seniors this year; Conner is the lead quarterback for the varsity team this year.  Connor said,”This …

Salvation Army Captain Carl Melton and Jerry Williams, director of community relations, brought three pallets of school supplies to city hall on Monday, July 29, at 2 p.m. The ladies who created and promoted this program, Amanda Hawley-Causey, Deborah Cannon, Jenna Winborne and Tonsheka Wilson, are overjoyed with the donations they have received during the three week campaign to collect school supplies for needy children in the area.  When the Salvation Army arrived with three pallets of school supplies, they were overwhelmed with emotion at the amount of items donated.
