Loris mourns the loss of a city worker.  Anthony “Rabbit” Melvin, who worked as a water crew leader, died in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, July 28, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Melvin was traveling south on Highway 701 when he attempted to pass a vehicle that resulted in a head-on collision with a truck. The Loris Fire Department volunteers were the first to arrive on the scene. Three city leaders attended the annual Municipal Association of South Carolina Conference that was held on Thursday, July 18, through Sunday, July 21, in Greenville.  Mayor Todd Harrelson, Councilwoman Joan Gause and Loris City Clerk and Treasurer Kenya Wright attended meetings with other municipalities from South Carolina to discuss topics ranging from strategic planning, social media, opportunity zones, economic development and public safety. Facebook is buzzing about the Loris Police Department (LPD) who observed a naked man on the side of the road near Church Street. The officer stopped and spoke with the man and then drove off.  A video is reported showing the man standing in what looks like he is wearing nothing at all.  Lt. The Loris Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant will reopen on Thursday, July 11, after being closed for two weeks remodeling and updating equipment.  Devon Carey, District Manager for KFC, said, “The employees have not had to take time off work as their help with minor work, cleaning and working to prepare the restaurant for the reopening.”  Carey stated the popular Pepsi product, Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning, is now on the menu.  Some menu items have changed, but livers and gizzards are still the most popular items requested by customers and will be served daily. Loris Fire Department along with Loris Police Department hosted the Grand Strand Trauma Services Team in updates to our area Trauma Program and in bleeding control training and equipment.  Two dozen responders learned current national trends, refreshed on basic and new bleeding control skills, learned about historical cases to large responses and new program updates.  Several LFD and LPD responders are also now trained in delivering  bleeding control training to our local civic groups, churches, business and general public.
