A special election to select a successor to the late Mayor Henry L. Nichols will be held on Tuesday, May 28, to fill the term of mayor until December 31, 2019. Four residents have filed with the city to be placed on the ballot for the May special election. They are: Joan Gause, council member; Todd Harrelson, council member and mayor pro tem; Michael E. A town hall style meeting was hosted by the Loris Chamber of Commerce, Jack Murphy, the Loris Recreation Center and a city official to discuss with business owners and the public the future for Loris. Twenty-two students at Loris Middle School participated in the school’s Technology Fair held on Thursday, March 15, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The students select a category they want to create from a list provided by Amber LaSalle, the school’s media specialist. The projects at the fair included robotics, digital photography, animation, mobile app creation and video editing. They began working on their presentation beginning in November 2018 with the deadline of March 15, 2019. The Zoning Commission Committee met on Monday, March 18, at 5:30 p.m. in the Loris Chamber of Commerce conference room. The Loris City Council meeting was held on Monday, March 11, at 6 p.m. at McLeod Loris Center for Health and Fitness with Todd Harrelson, mayor pro-tem, presiding over the meeting. Loris Elementary School held a parade on Friday, March 1, to celebrate and bring awareness in a fun way for children to want to read books. LES supports the National Reading Month every year with a new way to share interest in reading. This year they celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 114th birthday one day early. A celebration of life and a tribute for Mayor Henry L. “Buck” Nichols was held on Monday, March 4, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. at Loris First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Osment officiating. The pews were filled to capacity leaving standing room only with family, friends, council members, politicians and personnel who worked closely with Nichols. The winter sports include the varsity and junior varsity teams of cheerleading, girls and boys basketball and wrestling.
