Loris Chamber Awards Banquet recognizes residents for achievements

The Loris Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards banquet on Thursday, Jan. 24, honoring and acknowledging residents of Loris for their contributions to the community. The banquet began with a social hour and dinner from 6 to 7 p.m. with Banana Jack Murphy as emcee welcoming everyone to the banquet.  He introduced and welcomed the local politicians in attendance, Senator Greg Hembree, Loris City Councilmen Mike Suggs and Todd Harrelson and House of Representatives Kevin Hardee.  “Thank you for your service day in and day out,” said Murphy, “thanks for all you do to represent us at the various …

Loris Fire Department Spreads Word For Safety

Lt. Robert Rudelitch, Fire Marshal and Training Coordinator, stated the LFD responded to over 1,200 calls in 2018. He said, “As for 2018, it was the busiest year for the Loris Fire Department with over 1,200 calls requiring emergency services.” The LFD responds to all calls requiring emergency services which include fire, vehicle accidents and medical calls. The report for last year’s responses has not officially been released, though Rudelitch said that report will be available soon. He stated that the Loris Fire Department has responded to a number of fires since Jan. 1, 2019. The LFD volunteer firefighters have …

Fish Fundraiser Brings Community Together

Loris First Presbyterian Church (LFPC) held its first fish fry fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. prepared to feed more than 200 people who prepaid for their tickets and held hope for more to come enjoy a meal for $8 a plate. Early risers gathered to prepare the white fish, fries and green beans. Andy Zink, a member of the church, organized the fundraiser asking volunteers to help batter the fish and fry them up for a great meal. Zink ordered 120 pounds of whiting, 110 pounds of French fries and 160 pounds of green …

Induction into Senior Beta Club held last Friday

Loris High School held their annual Senior Beta Club induction on Friday, Jan. 11, at 8 a.m. Tyneshia Fayall welcomed guests and students to the program. The LHS R.O.T.C. posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Five seniors spoke of the Keys to Success, achievement, character, leadership and service. Marie Hemphill, LHS 2019 Teacher of the Year, introduced Korbin Causey, LHS alumnus class of 2012 and vice president of Mortgage Lending at Guaranteed Rate, addressed the students congratulating them for the hard work that it takes to achieve a 3.5 – 4.0 GPA. Council Meeting Time Changes In New Year

The Loris City Council met on Monday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Community Room at the McLeod Loris Seacoast Center for Health and Fitness Center. The delay of January’s council meeting was due to conflicting schedules at the fitness center. Todd Harrelson, council member and mayor-pro tem, called the meeting to order asking T. Hardee to provide the invocation, and the pledge of allegiance was recited by all. The council members present were Joan Gause, Lewis Hardee, Terrence Hardee, Mike Suggs and Jan Vescovi. The Mighty Lion Award

The Mighty Lion Award is given to a teacher or support staff member each month who has gone above and beyond in their job.  A nomination is made to recognize those who go beyond their job description to help others.  Thomasena Washington was surprised to receive this award,.“I do my job and never expected to receive this award,” says Washington.  Pictured left to right are Dr. Davis, Richard Crumley, Thomasena Washington and Josh Cutright.  The program began this school year to  bring recognition and appreciation to the staff at Loris High School.

Locks of Love Hair Donation Is For A Good Cause

A person’s identity is one’s outward appearance as it is what others see first.  Through the ages from Samson when Delilah cut off his hair weakening his strength to now as hair makes a statement about the person.  We have seen dreadlocks, crimped, curled, straightened hairstyles and some that make a person say ‘hmmm’.  Then there are those who have lost their hair due to an illness, especially women; they will wear scarves, bandanas and slouchy snoods and wigs. Ebony Garden Club Gain Rewards

The Ebony Garden Club in Loris was established in 1963. They are not as well known as the Loris Garden Club, but they do their due diligence in helping make their neighborhoods a prettier place to live. Melvina Lewis is the current president of the club. She has many great ideas and plans for 2019 in helping to bring in speakers and professionals to meet with the garden club. One Young Lady Wants To Make A Real Difference

Winter Parker is a 2017 graduate of Loris High School who began studying at Coastal Carolina College majoring in Athletic Training with a double major in Psychology. All things were looking up for this 19 year old with ambitions and dreams. The dreams remain, however, delayed because of one fateful night in late April of this year when she and her boyfriend, Charles “Bo” Durant II, heard gunfire as they headed back to Bo’s parents home for dinner.
