DECA Wins Big

The D.E.C.A. (Distributive Education Clubs of America) traveled to West Ashley High School to participate in the Regional Role Play Competition. LeAundra Gore placed first in Accounting, Chukeya Williams placed third in Entrepreneurship and Mia Delgado-Naredo and Ja’Maya Jackson placed in the top 10 in Hotels & Lodging Management. The D.E.C.A. students will travel to Charleston in March to compete in the state level in their respective categories.

God’s Gifts Provides Christmas

The beginning of a community outreach program, God’s Gifts, began in 2012 by one strong Christian lady, Stella McDowell. The purpose of the program is to provide Christmas to teenagers between the ages of 13 to 18, both girls and boys. McDowell said that she was given the idea in 2011 when her sister was jailed and released to move to South Carolina to be closer to family. She had to find her sister a place to stay; she realized they needed furniture and household items as well as clothing along with cleaning and hygienic supplies. McDowell was able to …

Christmas Parade Lights Up City

The Loris Chamber of Commerce and city employees worked diligently preparing for the 2018 Loris Christmas parade that was held on Friday, Nov. 30, beginning at 4 p.m. [smartslider3 slider=2]   To begin the festivities Santa and Mrs. Claus were ready and waiting to visit with children of all ages to listen to their Christmas wish lists at the Courtyard on Main in front of the Christmas tree. Turkey Trot is held down Daisy Hallways

Daisy Elementary School’s second annual Turkey Trot was scheduled to be run at Loris Nature Park. Due to inclement weather the activity was held within the hallways of the school. On Thursday, Nov. 17, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. students in the Fun Run after school program met in the gymnasium where Betsy Faulk, the P.E. teacher, provided instructions and rules for the run. The Fun Run program has over 40 members who have a set goal of 26.2 miles, the amount of miles in a marathon, they must meet by the end of the school year. They join the …

Group Honors Veterans

The Loris Women’s Coalition held their third annual Salute to Loris American Heroes, a Veterans Day tribute. Veda Nichols, director and coordinator, along with the lady members of the coalition spent Saturday morning, Nov 10, at 10 a.m. honoring the Loris veterans. Nichols welcomed guests speaking of the poem, “The Noble and the Brave”, by Joanna Fuchs. When America had an urgent need, these brave ones raised a hand; no hesitation held them back; they were proud to take a stand. Toby Talks About His Dog Attack

Felipe “Toby” Mendoza was enjoying a warm day of outdoor fun with his sister and his friends on Sunday, Oct. 21, when Rocky, the neighbor’s pit bull, attacked him. Toby shared his experience at first referring to the dog by its name, Rocky, when describing how they have played in the past, but once he began describing the events after the first bite, he referred to it as “the dog”. Toby detailed the events from the beginning saying, “My friend got into some trouble and had to go inside the house, so I waited for him to come back out.” …

Trunk or Treat was Exciting for All Ages

A trunk-or-treat event sponsored by Capture Inc. and Loris First Baptist Church was held on Halloween night, Wednesday, Oct. 31, beginning at 6 p.m. Children dressed as unicorns, scarecrows, super heroes and witches and held their bags out for candy. The excitement of the evening was approaching each trunk open and decorated filled with candy for the children trick-or treating. Capture Inc. and Loris First Baptist combined efforts to make a safe place for children to trick-or-treat, have a hot dog or chicken, chips and a soda with cotton candy and popcorn readily available for all ages.
