By Pete Brooks The United States Chamber of Commerce, at its board meeting last week, awarded the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, Convention & Visitors Bureau with 5-Star Accreditation for its sound policies, effective organizational procedures and positive impact on the community. “Accreditation validates a chamber as having programs that benefit its local economy and positively influence its community,” said Raymond P. By Pat Dowling During their regularly scheduled March 16, 7 p.m. meeting, the North Myrtle Beach City Council adopted an emergency ordinance and an emergency declaration. Just as the city adopts emergency ordinances and declarations for hurricanes, this declaration positions the city to be able to respond to COVID-19 related issues as they may arise locally. It also positions the city to qualify for state or federal reimbursements that may be provided to help reduce the impact that COVID-19 related expenditures may have on the city’s budget. This past week a member of the South Carolina Highway Patrol directed traffic at the intersection of Main Street and Broad Street in Loris while the traffic lights were being changed out. Employees of ALS of North Carolina, Inc. based out of Fayetteville was subcontracted by the South Carolina Department of Transportation to change out the old stop lights and install new modern stop lights that improve the safety of the turn lanes and to help traffic move through the intersection more efficiently.

Decorated golf carts have always been a big part of the North Myrtle Beach Annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. The 32nd Annual North Myrtle Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival will be on Saturday, March 14, on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. The parade begins at 9 a.m. and the festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The one-day rain or shine event attracts more than 40,000 people annually. Prior to the March 2 City Council meeting, Council met in a 6:15 p.m. executive session to receive a legal briefing concerning the lawsuit between the City of Myrtle Beach and Horry County regarding local accommodations and hospitality taxes.
