Ceremony marks start of program

Last week, lots of parents and grandparents, hundreds of fall youth sports participants ages 7 to 17 and their coaches, the Mayor and City Council, the North Myrtle Beach Recreation Commission and others gathered at the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex to mark the start of the 2019 fall youth sports program, which includes 27 teams with 560 people. Fall sports include tackle football, flag football, lacrosse, volleyball and soccer. Lyon appointed to Tree City Board

Jeanette Lyon was appointed by City Council to serve a four-year term on the North Myrtle Beach Tree City Board. The Tree City Board meets quarterly, although special meetings may also be held. The Tree City Board advises the city in all tree-related matters; serves as a source of information about proper tree maintenance techniques and community tree management policies; makes recommendations for public tree establishment, maintenance, protection and removal; provides input to the public grounds superintendent for the development of an annual work plan and long-range planning; reviews the city’s tree ordinance, tree planting master plan and recommends changes …

New Sign being installed

A 12-foot by 16-foot LED Screen is being installed at the southwestern corner of Highway 17 and Robert Edge Parkway The SCDOT-approved sign will have a brick base and landscaping. Constructed to withstand winds of up to 140 mph, the sign will help promote city festivals, concerts, sports tourism and other events and will share city information during hurricanes and other incidents.

Senator Hembree selected for national leadership program Senator Greg Hembree of Little River has been selected to participate in the 2019 Center for the Advancement of Leadership Skills (CALS) in Little Rock, Arkansas, from Oct. 5-9. Inaugurated in 2007, CALS is the annual leadership program of the Southern Legislative Conference of The Council of State Governments. Panthers defeat Lions

The Loris Varsity Football welcomed the Carolina Forest Panthers to Loris this past Friday night. The 10th ranked Panthers were more than the Lions could handle. Violet Rollings Boyd

Violet Rollings Boyd, age 76, of Loris passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019, at her home in Little River. Mrs. Boyd was born on March 17, 1943, in Jefferson to the late Bennett “Jack” Rollings and the late Ruth Jenkins Rollings.  Survivors include her two brothers, Jimmy Rollings and wife Mary Ann of Lancaster and Gary L. Rollings and wife Barbara of Kershaw; and her nephew, Ronald Brown of Little River. Mrs. Boyd was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Aubrey Boyd, and her sister, Lucille James. Theodore ‘Ted’ Van Weeren

Theodore “Ted” Van Weeren, 72, of Longs died on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, at McLeod Seacoast Medical Center in Little River. Born on Sept. 10, 1947, in Holland, he was the son of the late Jacobus and Johanna Van Weeren.  Ted was an accountant and attorney.  He was the recipient of two Emmy Awards for his work at the Olympic Games in 1984 and 1988.
