Prior to the August 19 North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, Council members met in executive session to discuss possible appointments to the Construction Board of Appeals. Recently Oakboro, N.C., honored their heroes. This came about as a promotion spearheaded by Renee Poplin with the Oakboro Fire Department honoring the men from Oakboro who fought in World War II. Sgt. Wilson Hatley served in the United States Army Air Force as a crew chief on the B-24 bomber. His plane was named Frankie Ferocious. They flew 98 missions during World War II. His son, David Hatley of North Myrtle Beach, was in Oakboro recently and had his picture taken near his father’s banner in the town.

Marilee Toomey, 77, of North Myrtle Beach, died on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019, at MUSC in Charleston, S.C. Born on May 10, 1942, in Franklin, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Fedor Kozlowski, Mrs. Toomey was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, William D. Toomey; son, Keith Toomey (Corinne); daughter, Kathleen Toomey Burgos; and two grandchildren, Avery and Sheamus Toomey. Funeral services for Michael F. Ziegler, 68, of Longs, were held at 12 noon on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019 at St. Gabriel Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord Township. Family and friends were asked to meet at the church. Mr. Ziegler passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019, at his residence in South Carolina.
