Blue Crab Festival wins state awards

The World Famous Blue Crab Festival has received three separate awards from the South Carolina Festival and Events Association’s (SCFEA) 2019 Festival & Event Planner’s Conference. The SCFEA Excellence Awards program provides an opportunity for industry recognition for event professionals throughout the state. Hospital celebrates volunteer Kapps’ 100th birthday

A surprise 100th birthday celebration was held on Tuesday, Feb. 19, for a McLeod Health Loris volunteer who was born when Woodrow Wilson was president. Hospital staff, physicians and administration gathered to celebrate Ms. Sallie Kapps with a 100 themed birthday party in the hospital cafeteria. “Mrs. Sallie is an inspiration to us all,” said Scott Montgomery, McLeod Loris Administrator. “She has a true servant’s heart and wonderful spirit.” Mrs. Kapps has been a volunteer at McLeod Health Loris since 1984. Bass Pro Shops asking anglers to trade in gear and help connect kids to nature

Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s are celebrating the return of fishing season and inviting customers to trade in used gear to be donated to local charities in exchange for big savings. The 2019 Spring Fishing Classic is a free celebration taking place through March 3 at Bass Pro Shops in Myrtle Beach. Customers that donate used rods and reels in working order can receive trade-in savings of up to $200 on a new rod and reel. Marlene Hight Yancey, 65, of North Myrtle Beach passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019. Marlene was born on Oct. 12, 1953, in Warrenton, N.C., to the late A. B. (Bert) Hight and Elizabeth Peoples Hight. She attended Louisburg College. Marlene worked for the Chancellors Office at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. and the Vance and Guilford County Extension Office. Stanley W. Dolesh, 78, of Longs died on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, at his home. Born on Oct. 20, 1940; in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Stanley W. Sr. and Lillian Dolesh. He was a devoted husband to the late Mary C. Dolesh. He was the loving father of the late Tom Dolesh and surviving children, William Dolesh (Marilyn), Elizabeth Miller (Scott), Daniel Dolesh, Christopher Dolesh (Lenore), Dennis Dolesh (Melissa) and David Dolesh (Wendy). Nelson “Edd” Powell, 68, of Little River passed away on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, surrounded by family. Edd was born on Oct. 31, 1950, in Lake City to the late Olin and Hazel Powell. Edd attended Newberry College and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974.
