Benjamin “Tilly” Tillman Hughes, 87, of Loris passed away on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at home following an illness. Mr. Hughes was born on April 5, 1931, in Loris to the late Jessie Ferd Hughes and the late Augusta Ada Dillard Hughes.
He served his country with honor and dignity in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and was a longtime member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught a men’s Sunday school class. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Mr. Hughes was an optician in Loris and Conway.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Audrey Hughes of the home; son, Eric Ben Hughes of Loris; two brothers, Daniel Hughes of Loris and Andrew Hughes of New Port News, Va.; two granddaughters, Jessica Kelly Hughes of Longs and Casey Willard and husband Will of Hamlet, N.C.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Jefferson Davis Hughes, Robert Hughes, James Hughes and the Rev. Thomas Hughes; and three sisters, Lucille McQueen, Kathleen Stanley and Sylvia Stevens.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hardwick Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Pastor Rodney Hord and the Rev. Mack Hutson officiating. Committal services followed at Hillcrest Mausoleum in Conway.
