Loris Lions take on South Columbus Stallions Friday night

The Loris Lions battled the South Columbus Stallions on Monday, Sept. 9, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Heniford Field.  The Friday night game for Sept. 6 was postponed due to Hurricane Dorian.

Both the Lions and Stallions missed almost a week of practices because of the school closures for both of the Carolinas after the Labor Day weekend for hurricane preparation.

Members of the Blue Pride gathered at 6:30 p.m. for dinner and a chat before the game as the Loris Lions Marching Band directed by Stephen Whiznant stood welcoming the Lions as they roared onto the field.  The LHS J.R.O.T.C. Honor Guard stood with the flags as the band played the National Anthem and the crowd stood with their hats off and hands over their hearts.

In the first quarter neither team scored or came close to their goal posts.  The second quarter saw some action when the Lions took a two to nothing lead.  The third quarter Grant of the Stallions took the ball 60 yards down the sidelines for an upsetting score of six to two lead.  In the fourth quarter Bryce Faircloth takes the hand-off to the 10 yard line with no score.

That was at the last 7.20 minutes of the game which was delayed 30 minutes due to lightning strikes.  As the field filled with Stallions and Lions the stands were bare, but the Lions marched the field for the last play of the night back at the 10 yard line where Gage Conner, number 12 quarterback, sneaked the ball into the end zone for a score.

The scoreboard was not working during game time.  The LHS Athletic Director, Barry Brooks, said, “The scoreboard was working fine when we tested it at 3 p.m. today and wasn’t working when we came out to prepare for the game.”  He stated it may be a signal issue from the press box to the scoreboard.

The ending score was 15 to 6 with the Lions winning their first game of the season.
