NMB All Star Teams begin State Championship hunt this weekend

Four North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Department all star teams have successfully advanced to the state Dixie Youth championship.

The 7-8 year-old boys team is the first squad to begin their quest for a title as they travel to Florence to begin play in a twelve team double elimination tournament. Their first game is at 9 a.m. this Saturday and if they win (or lose) they can advance to the championship game which probably will occur next Thursday.

Two of the remaining all star teams will begin play a week from this Saturday, July 13. The 9-10 year-old team travels to Anderson with their first game at 11 a.m. The 11-12 year-old team has their first game in Bluffton at 11:30 a.m. Both tournaments also have twelve teams challenging for the championship.

The 13-14 year-old team will be playing their games in Bluffton as well, with their tournament beginning on July 19 through July 25.

Superintendent of Recreation/ Sports Tourism Matt Gibbons is excited about the chances for these teams. It’s the first time that we can remember ever having four teams advance to the state Dixie Youth tournament. We’re proud of the players and coaches and all the hard work they have put in to get this far. We would love to see these teams win their tournament and make it to the Dixie Youth World Series,” Gibbons said.

Sixty girls softball teams begin tournament play this weekend at the City of North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex.

The teams are all part of the World Fast Pitch Connection Summer Nationals Tournament starting Saturday. Twenty-five teams begin tournament play Saturday and Sunday, with 35 more teams set to start on Monday.

All teams are part of the 12 and under to 16 and under age bracket.
