NMB Lions to recognize Diabetes Awareness Month

November is recognized as Diabetes Awareness Month.

Lions International members have as a primary mission the eradication of preventable blindness. Diabetes retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss in adults aged 20-74 years and has been ranked as the fifth most prevalent cause of preventable blindness and severe vision loss.

In response to this serious disease the North Myrtle Beach Lions conducted an educational outreach program at Boulineau’s on Friday, Nov. 15, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Lions distributed helpful information including a pamphlet , “It’s Not Too Late To Prevent Diabetes.” According to North Myrtle Beach Lions Club president Priscilla Wrobel, “It has recently been estimated that South Carolina has the fifth highest rate of diabetes in the U.S. with 13.4 percent of the population.  We want to do our part to spread the word to our neighbors about positive steps they can take.  Increased exercise, eating healthy and controlling weight all help immensely.”
