The Columbiettes of Our Lady Star of the Sea Auxiliary #7122 welcomed four new members at an installation ceremony on May 23 at Our Lady Star of the Sea in North Myrtle Beach. From church new members are Patty Nyikos, Sharon Hawk, Silvia Murrieta-Goldberg and Nancy Terrell. District Deputy Doris Couldron and President Ann Bauco welcomed them. The Columbiettes, the Catholic women’s auxiliary, is dedicated to helping the OLSS Knights of Columbus, the church and the community. The Loris mayoral election ended at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28. The candidates and family members as well as their supporters filled the seats at the Public Safety Building where the Election Committee, Venson Powers and Melzetta Gore, opened the provisional boxes, tallied the votes for each candidate and announced the absentee votes. The candidates vying for mayor for the city were Jeannie Tyler-Fox, Joan Gause, Mike Suggs and Todd Harrelson. The Loris City Council met on Wednesday, May 22, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall for the express purpose to discuss the audit from the year 2015-16. Present at the meeting were Joan Gause, Lewis Hardee, Todd Harrelson, Mike Suggs and Jan Vescovi; Terrence Hardee was not present.  Also present was Kenya Wright, city clerk and treasurer and Damon Kempski, city administrator.  Department Heads present were Brandon Harrelson, Tom Cocke, LPD Chief Gary Buley, LPD Lt. On Friday, May 24 Green Sea Floyds High School held its annual awards ceremony for their students enrolled in the U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program. North Myrtle Beach Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10804 has been a part of this awards program for the last few years and has presented VFW awards to deserving students nominated by their Army instructors. Louise Maria Andrews departed us on Friday, May 10, 2019, after a lengthy illness and now is in the loving embrace of her Lord and Savior. She was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on May 3, 1926, and was the oldest of 10 children. She lived through the Dutch famine of World War II, which at times required her to cross the country on her bicycle in search of food. She met her future husband, Earl Andrews, during the occupation phase of World War II. They were married for 65 years. It has been said that Mom brought a wee bit …

Glen Alan “Rock” Purchell, 59, of Little River and formerly of Virginia, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at his residence. Glen was born in Portsmouth, Va., the son of Loisanne Long Purchell and the late Gordon Eugene Purchell. Glen retired from the Washington Area Transit Authority as a supervisor after 30 years with the authority. He recently started a new job at a local marina as a forklift driver and was thoroughly enjoying his new beach life occupation. Bonnie Faye Roberts Floyd,  83, of Loris passed away on Monday, May 13, 2019, at her home. Mrs. Floyd was born on Dec. 28, 1935, in Tabor City, N.C., to the late Henry Hampton Roberts Sr. and the late Grace Phillips Roberts. She was a longtime member of Lake Swamp Baptist Church and the owner and operator of W.E. Floyd’s grocery until her retirement. Survivors include her son, Keith Floyd of Loris; her daughter, Delilah F. Eaddy and her husband Frank of Loris; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. While sitting on the metal bleachers last week watching my grandson play his last tee-ball game of the season I thought about my kids playing at the Central Park tee-ball field many years ago.
