A celebration of life and a tribute for Mayor Henry L. “Buck” Nichols was held on Monday, March 4, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. at Loris First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Osment officiating. The pews were filled to capacity leaving standing room only with family, friends, council members, politicians and personnel who worked closely with Nichols. City workers, Loris Police Department and the Loris Fire Department represented the city’s mourning of a man who was loved by many. The winter sports include the varsity and junior varsity teams of cheerleading, girls and boys basketball and wrestling. Barry Brooks, athletic director for LHS, hosted the banquet awards dinner at the school cafeteria on Tuesday, Feb. 26, beginning at 6 p.m. Dinner was catered by the IGA in Loris with chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese, a roll and banana pudding. A surprise 100th birthday celebration was held on Tuesday, Feb. 19, for a McLeod Health Loris volunteer who was born when Woodrow Wilson was president. Hospital staff, physicians and administration gathered to celebrate Ms. Sallie Kapps with a 100 themed birthday party in the hospital cafeteria. “Mrs. Sallie is an inspiration to us all,” said Scott Montgomery, McLeod Loris Administrator. “She has a true servant’s heart and wonderful spirit.” Mrs. Kapps has been a volunteer at McLeod Health Loris since 1984. Loris Mayor Henry L. “Buck” Nichols passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2019, at approximately 4 p.m. He had returned home from the hospital for two days before returning to The Loris McLeod Hospital emergency room. He was admitted to the I.C.U. department where he succumbed to his illness. Nichols was in his first term of office. The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs wrestling team capped a successful season with three second place finishers at the 4A state wrestling individual championships in Anderson, on February 22 and 23. The Chiefs also had a third place winner during the two-day event at the Anderson Civic center. Second place winners were Jackie Gore in the 145 pound class, Chase Simmons in 170 and Curtis Wolfe in the 220 pound group. Malachi Black took third in the 285 pound group.
