Loris Garden Club members contribute to the Giving Hope Nursery. Some Club members began their 2018-19 members in September with Buck Creek Foundation Board officers Lori Suggs and Dale Holt presenting a program about the Giving Hope Nursery project. This non-profit group specializes in fostering independence in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, such as autism. The previous Clardy Nursery is being revitalized into a business with the goals of providing jobs and training for those individuals growing and selling organic produce to area restaurants and the public. Prior to the Monday, Dec. 3, North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, Council members held an executive session during which they discussed a potential contract between the city and Beam & Associates. Council took no action. During the Dec. 3 meeting, Sandhills Bank representatives presented the city with a check in the amount of $1,451 for the North Myrtle Beach Shop with a Cop program. The funds were collected during the annual Mayfest on Main® Festival. The Loris Chamber of Commerce and city employees worked diligently preparing for the 2018 Loris Christmas parade that was held on Friday, Nov. 30, beginning at 4 p.m. [smartslider3 slider=2]   To begin the festivities Santa and Mrs. Claus were ready and waiting to visit with children of all ages to listen to their Christmas wish lists at the Courtyard on Main in front of the Christmas tree. The GFWC North Myrtle Beach Woman’s Club’s Annual Candlelight Christmas Tour of Homes is scheduled for Friday evening, December 7th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and the public is welcomed to attend. Six home interiors decorated for the holiday season will be open for public viewing. The homes of Peter and Cory Winn, Pam Huey, Amber and John Stephenson, and Ann Swain will be on the tour, as well as two model homes in Bridgewater and Seabrook Plantation. Described as North Myrtle Beach’s “matriarch”, a “gem” and the “best representation” of community spirit, Pauline Lowman has been selected for the third time since 1975 to be the Christmas Parade Grand Marshal. The parade will be held this Saturday at 5:30 p.m. on Main Street. Known as “Ms. Polly,” Lowman turned 83 on Friday and for 48 years has been the publisher of the North Myrtle Beach Times, as well as the three-decade long publisher of the Loris Times. The 34th annual Christmas Regatta went off without a hitch Saturday, as the weather cleared from earlier downpours and 20 boats sailed down the Intracoastal Waterway, lights twinkling, music blaring and shouts of Merry Christmas issuing from the boaters aboard. “We appreciate everyone that paraded with us. Fortunately, the weather turned out fantastic. We couldn’t ask for anything better,” said Susie Watson, event organizer. “And we appreciate the committee – they have got to be recognized for all the hard work they do all year. The North Myrtle Beach Community Band will present its Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free. The Christmas Concert will be at the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center located at 1030 Possum Trot Road. The North Myrtle Beach Community Band will delight the audience with holiday favorites and classical works.

The Loris Chamber of Commerce and the City of Loris workers have been busy preparing the Courtyard on Main for the upcoming Christmas festivities. The city will hold its annual Christmas kickoff on Friday, Nov. 30, at 4 p.m. with a variety of entertainers singing. Santa will be on hand to talk with all the children. Daisy Elementary School’s second annual Turkey Trot was scheduled to be run at Loris Nature Park. Due to inclement weather the activity was held within the hallways of the school. On Thursday, Nov. 17, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. students in the Fun Run after school program met in the gymnasium where Betsy Faulk, the P.E. teacher, provided instructions and rules for the run. The Fun Run program has over 40 members who have a set goal of 26.2 miles, the amount of miles in a marathon, they must meet by the end of the school year. They join the …

The original boat parade in the area, the Intracoastal Waterway Christmas Regatta, launches this Saturday from Little River to 13th Avenue North in North Myrtle Beach, starting at dusk with 30 boats, large and small, literally decked out for the holidays. Organizers are expecting as many as 20,000 people to view it, said Susie Watson, event organizer. That includes many people at private parties in homes along the waterway as well as those going to restaurants and bars.
