Lights went out Sunday in Loris

Early Sunday morning, Aug. 25, darkness veiled the entire city of Loris. First the electrical power dimmed lights starting at 2:15 a.m., the power completely went out minutes later. Lights throughout Loris were out, traffic signals were out. The street lights lining Main Street from Broad Street to Railroad Avenue were illuminating the street and stores. Hardee’s, NAPA and the convenience store at Board and Main had emergency lights shining inside the buildings. The generator at Hills Grocery Store was running keeping the power to the freezers going. Three candidates have signed to run in the Nov. 5, 2019, general election on Friday, Aug. 23. Councilman Lewis Hardee, Mayor Todd Harrelson and newcomer Veda Nichols visited the Loris City Hall, fi led the proper paperwork and paid the fees. Filing ends at 12 noon on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019. City Council approves special event permits

Prior to the August 19 North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, Council members met in executive session to discuss possible appointments to the Construction Board of Appeals. Council took no action.  During the Council meeting, Mayor Marilyn Hatley presented a Proclamation declaring September 17-23 to be Constitution Week in North Myrtle Beach. David Hatley of NMB

Recently Oakboro, N.C., honored their heroes. This came about as a promotion spearheaded by Renee Poplin with the Oakboro Fire Department honoring the men from Oakboro who fought in World War II. Sgt. Wilson Hatley served in the United States Army Air Force as a crew chief on the B-24 bomber. His plane was named Frankie Ferocious. They flew 98 missions during World War II. His son, David Hatley of North Myrtle Beach, was in Oakboro recently and had his picture taken near his father’s banner in the town.

Marilee Toomey

Marilee Toomey, 77, of North Myrtle Beach, died on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019, at MUSC in Charleston, S.C. Born on May 10, 1942, in Franklin, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Fedor Kozlowski, Mrs. Toomey was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, William D. Toomey; son, Keith Toomey (Corinne); daughter, Kathleen Toomey Burgos; and two grandchildren, Avery and Sheamus Toomey. Funeral services for Michael F. Ziegler, 68, of Longs, were held at 12 noon on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019 at St. Gabriel Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord Township. Family and friends were asked to meet at the church. Mr. Ziegler passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019, at his residence in South Carolina. NMB High School football teams and cheerleaders introduced to fans

Last Thursday evening the North Myrtle Beach High School football teams, band and cheerleaders were introduced individually to fans, parents and boosters for the first time. The band marched onto the field and played a preview of their halftime show. The varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads performed and then the JV and varsity football teams were introduced as they walked down the stadium track. It was a unique way to introduce everyone and show how each of the groups are important to the success of the football program.
