The North Myrtle Beach City Council held its fiscal year 2021 budget retreat meeting Feb. 24-25 at Santee Cooper’s Wampee Conference Center in Pinopolis which was open to the public. The city’s fiscal year is July 1-June 30. The proposed budget involves 17 separate funds with significant interrelations and transfers between the various funds. The proposed FY 2021 budget is about $119 million, an increase of about $27 million over the FY 2020 budget. The budget proposes a property tax increase of about 7.9 mils, most of which would go toward funding an expansion of the North Myrtle Beach Park …

The North Myrtle Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC) and the Grand Strand Masters Swim Team offer free beginner swim lessons for adults and children ages five and older June 3-6 at the AFC. Classes are 5:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Preregistration is required and available at the AFC at 1100 Second Avenue South beginning on May 13. Farmers interested in enrolling in the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) this year have until May 10 to submit initial paperwork to their local Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) office. The process to indicate interest in enrolling in CSP is easy. Farmers and ranchers only need to submit a three-page form and their farm record number to NRCS. Those who do not have a farm record number should first contact their local Farm Service Agency office to obtain one. The Loris recreation department is holding Baseball Opening Day on Thursday, April 4. The opening ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. and games begin at 6 p.m. On Monday, April 1, Coastal Carolina University mascot Chauncey visited the park during practice for the children to have their pictures made with this special guest. Tom Cocke, director of the recreation center, said, “We have had to change the opening day a couple of times due to rain, we had planned to have the Myrtle Beach Pelicans mascot Splash visit.” Sadly, Splash is not available for Thursday’s game day, but he and Chauncey …

Todd Harrelson is running for the mayoral seat in the Special Election to be held in May. When Mayor Henry L. Nichols passed away in February the seat of mayor for the city of Loris was considered vacated. Mayor Pro-tem Todd Harrelson took over the duties as mayor of Loris.
