Council passes first reading on plastic bags ordinance

During the March 18 City Council meeting, Mayor Marilyn Hatley presented to Sea Haven for Youth Senior Community Services Coordinator Wendy Gore a proclamation declaring the week of March 17-March 23 as National Safe Place Week. This marks the 36th anniversary of the nationwide Safe Place collaborative community initiative. The proclamation urges the people of North Myrtle Beach to promote awareness of and volunteer involvement in the Safe Place program, managed locally by Sea Haven for Youth. NMB varsity baseball team wins during busy week

The North Myrtle Beach varsity baseball team began a week of games last Tuesday when they traveled to Myrtle Beach and came away with a 4-2 win. The Chiefs then took on their second “rival” team on Wednesday evening as Loris visited the Chiefs sports complex. This game went down to the wire as the Chiefs rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 9-8 win. Local team takes second place in the Carolina Wheelchair Basketball Conference tournament

The Coastal Chairmen, a local team that practices at the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic and Fitness center, took second place in the CWBC tournament last weekend at the aquatic center gymnasium. The Chairmen lost to the Fayetteville Flyers by a 66-54 score in the championship game Sunday afternoon. The two teams battled to an 18-18 score after the first period but the Flyers, who were undefeated throughout the double elimination tournament, slowly took charge after that. They increased their lead to 37-30 at the half, then led 52-42 after three ten-minute periods and won by a 66-54 margin. Seven teams …

Planning Commission meeting is rescheduled

The city of Loris Planning Commission met on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 5:30 p.m. at the Loris Chamber of Commerce conference room. In attendance were Brandon Harrelson, city planning commission chair, city attorney Kenneth Moss and committee members Tommy Brogdon and Ruth Ann Jones. Also present were resident Wendy Baruch and Todd Harrelson, mayor pro tem. Three members appointed by council must be present to continue with a meeting. City Council hears reports

The Loris City Council meeting was held on Monday, March 11, at 6 p.m. at McLeod Loris Center for Health and Fitness with Todd Harrelson, mayor pro-tem, presiding over the meeting. This is the first council meeting held without Mayor Henry L. Nichols in which Harrelson requested a moment of silence in his memory. Terrence Hardee gave the invocation and all stood for the pledge of allegiance. St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Festival set for Saturday

The 31st Annual North Myrtle Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival is on Saturday, March 16, on Main Street. The parade begins at 9 a.m. and the festival is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The one-day rain or shine event attracts more than 30,000 people annually. The North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade presenting sponsor. The North Strand Optimist Club organizes the parade, and all entry fees go back into helping the youth of our community. NMB Naval Junior ROTC Unit wins big at meet

The Naval Junior ROTC at North Myrtle Beach High School was successful at the Carolina Forest Drill meet on Saturday, March 9. The drill team placed 2nd overall against many schools in the county including a school which competes on the national level. Trophies received included 1st place in Freshman Colorguard, 2nd place in Freshman Squad and Armed Squad and 3rd place in Unarmed Squad, Exhibition Squad, Armed Platoon and Unarmed Platoon. The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs baseball team beat Myrtle Beach 4-2 on Tuesday evening and then won a thriller against Loris by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 9-8 non-conference win. The Chiefs scored single runs in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to build a 4-0 lead, then held off a late bid by the Seahawks in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-2 conference victory.
