Democratic Presidential candidate and current United States Senator Kamala Harris visited the Grand Strand Friday afternoon in a visit to Big Mike’s Soul Food. Harris addressed around 300 attendees at a meet and greet that was organized by the Horry County Democratic Party. She spoke briefly on her progressive platform that includes positions on Medicare-for-all and the legalization of marijuana. Harris also took photos and answered questions from an energized crowd that filled the restaurant and flooded into the front parking lot. During the March 4 City Council meeting, City Council recognized and presented certificates of completion to North Myrtle Beach residents who graduated from the 2019 North Myrtle Beach Citizens Academy. Academy participants learned about work performed by city departments, their projects and some of the challenges they face. They also toured key city facilities. Loris Elementary School held a parade on Friday, March 1, to celebrate and bring awareness in a fun way for children to want to read books. LES supports the National Reading Month every year with a new way to share interest in reading. This year they celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 114th birthday one day early. Because his birthday landed on a Saturday, all elementary schools promoted the program on Friday. Voters in Loris will select the successor to the late Mayor Henry L. Nichols in a special election to be held on Tuesday, May 28, with the winner filling the office for only the remainder of this year. According to Dena Huggins of the Horry County Registration & Elections Office, state law requires a special election to fill an unexpired term of office if, when the vacancy occurs, there are more than 180 days left in that term before the next general election. North Myrtle Beach City Council voted last night on an ordinance that allows the city to grow its tax base without adding any additional burden on any city residents. A special city council meeting was scheduled to vote on the ordinance. The ordinance passed first reading. 15th Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson released an extensive report from SLED. The report fully exonerates Horry County Council Chairman Johnny Gardner and his business partner, Luke Barefoot. County Council Chairman Gardner won the popular vote last November with over 80,000 votes cast. Gardner’s integrity in Horry County is beyond question. His popularity among residents only grows with the release of this report, coupled with the manner in which the chairman comported himself throughout the process.

The South Carolina Conservation Bank has awarded the city of North Myrtle Beach $510,000 for Ingram Dunes. The grant, along with money pledged by the city and citizen contributions, will be used toward the purchase of a historic 9.4 acre site in the heart of the city, known to locals as Ingram Dunes. This is the first award from the South Carolina Conservation Bank in Horry County since 2005. It is a very exciting and monumental time for North Myrtle Beach and all of Horry County.
