The Rotary Club of Little River is holding its 12th Annual May 5K Charity Run

The Rotary Club of Little River is holding its 12th Annual May 5K Charity Run on the waterfront in Historic Little River on May 11, 2019. This event initially was started by the Blue Crab Festival committee during the 25th Anniversary of the Blue Crab Festival. Allen Lee, Craig Hill, Dr. Jim Troxell, and Greg and Renee Hembree were the organizers and are still connected to the event. Several years ago, the Rotary Club of Little River assumed the responsibility for the run. Ed Murray of the Rotary Club has chaired the event since.  Proceeds are donated to various charities. …

Legislative Update

We tee’d off Master’s weekend and the beginning of our furlough week with a special visit from the Carolina Panthers football team. Head Coach Ron Rivera visited the State House along with players, executives and their beloved mascot, Sir Purr. The welcomed visit comes as legislation is moving through the Senate to provide professional sports teams the same incentives the state gives other companies when they bring an attractive number of employees and economic benefits to the state. Conservation Stewardship Program sign up is underway

Farmers interested in enrolling in the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) this year have until May 10 to submit initial paperwork to their local Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) office. The process to indicate interest in enrolling in CSP is easy. Farmers and ranchers only need to submit a three-page form and their farm record number to NRCS. Those who do not have a farm record number should first contact their local Farm Service Agency office to obtain one. The new 2.5-mile McLeod Health Seacoast Nature Trail at the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex is open for your enjoyment. A ribbon cutting ceremony held on Tuesday, April 16, officially opened the trail. The trail features native vegetation and interesting wildlife. Users will see a variety of birds and animals and lush vegetation, including Longleaf pines. KAB Kids Junior Garden Club Winners at State Youth Symposium

By Sharon Robinson Three Riverside Elementary School members of the Driftwood Keep America Beautiful (KAB) Kids Junior Garden Club received awards from the Garden Club of South Carolina (GSCS) at the 2019 State Youth Symposium held on April 6 at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia.  Yvette Otero, a fifth grader, won first place for her poster of Smokey Bear “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires”. Eva Campman, a fourth grader, won honorable mention in the same category.  In the Woodsy Owl “Lend a Hand, Care for the Land” poster competition, Kh’ Mya Watts, a fourth grader, won second Place. Ordinance Creates Overlay District for Activity Centers

Prior to the April 15 North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, Council members met in executive session for a legal briefing regarding Code of Laws of South Carolina, Section 57-9-10. Council took no action. During the April 15 meeting, Mayor Marilyn Hatley presented a Proclamation naming April 2019 as National Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Month. She called on citizens to dedicate themselves to the task of improving quality of life for all children and families.
