Loris Rehab and Nursing Center residents lined up to watch the first annual Thanksgiving Parade on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Director of Nursing Tracey O’Connell said, “The residents enjoyed the parade and seeing their smiles today was wonderful.”  Participants in the parade were Mayor Todd Harrelson, Loris Fire Department, Loris Police Department, The Loris Chamber of Commerce with Cluck Norris, the nursing staff, Loris High School Marching Lions, chorus, J.R.R.O.T.C. and Santa. Tom Cocke, Joey Letts and Brandon Harrelson have been hanging the new LED Christmas lights throughout the city.  The new LED snowflakes were placed on the poles in the city last week.  Harrelson said there are more decorations coming and they are working hard to get them set up for the Christmas celebration and parade scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 9 p.m. in Loris.

Stella McDowell created God’s Gifts in 2012 and has spent the last seven years helping people who need assistance with every day items.  God’s Gifts is a nonprofit community outreach program that depends upon donations of furniture, clothing, food and more to provide for people throughout Horry County. On Saturday, Nov. 23, McDowell and volunteers set up the community Thanksgiving dinner gifts for 150 families who were unable to afford a family holiday dinner.  Each family received a turkey, freshly grown collards and sweet potatoes, stuffing mix, vegetables and cranberry sauce. City of Loris employees can be seen painting the new street light pole in the foreground and others are installing a new pole in the background. The city will have Main Street lights up by next week for the Christmas season holidays. A new Christmas tree will be up at the courtyard on Main this week.

Daisy Elementary School held their Run for Fun annual Turkey Trot on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Loris Nature Park. Teachers, staff members and parent volunteers were present to help encourage the students and to hand out feathers for each lap they completed. Last year the run was held inside the school due to inclement weather, however, this year the weather cooperated and the students were transported by bus to the park. The Loris Historical Society has been working hard renovating The State Theatre located at 4149 Main St.  You may have heard some hammering or dust flying the last few months.  It is coming along but help is definitely needed.  They have kicked off the first fundraiser and they hope you will be a part of it.  They are selling bricks for the foyer of the museum.  This is a great and unique gift for the holiday season.  Bricks can be purchased for $100 per brick.  You can have one in memory of or in honor of someone or something. Aaron, age nine, was instrumental in preventing a full house fire when he smelled smoke.  He said that he thought he smelled something burning and saw the smoke coming from behind the dryer.  He alerted his family and instructed them to crawl on the floor to avoid getting the smoke into their lungs. After calling 911, the family was safely outside of the home awaiting the fire department to come help save their home. The Loris Volunteer Fire Department and Horry County Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the home. Upon arrival they proceeded inside the home to investigate the …

The Loris High School annual Powder Puff game was held on Thursday, Nov. 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a $5 admission. The game was a fundraiser for the girl’s softball team who is coached by David Smith. In this game roles are reversed with all LHS grade levels participating. For a $20 entry fee young girls play football while young men create the cheering squad. The seniors and sophomores played football against the juniors and freshmen. Seven freshmen and sophomores provided cheers for the crowd and team. Coaches for the seniors and sophomores were Gage Conner, Josh Causey, Wayne …
