The Loris Chamber of Commerce presented the Miss Loris Bog-Off Festival Pageant on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Loris High School auditorium beginning at 1 p.m. The emcees for the pageant were Greg and Morina Martin. Greg welcomed everyone to the pageant then turned the program over to Morina. She introduced the judges giving a brief history of each one. Greg introduced each contestant, and Morina presented the question to the future queens. Cheer Leading Camp
A cheer camp was held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Loris High School gymnasium to learn cheering techniques with the Loris High School cheer squad. They showed standing on two other cheerleaders with a spotter behind, how to kick when ending a cheer and much more. Paiton Todd, coach, made arrangements with LHS for the camp. On Thursday, Sept. 12, cheerleaders for the Loris Recreation Center began practice with Kenya Wright, coach, and assistant coaches Cloey Wright and Desirae Reynolds. The Loris Recreation Center Committee met on Monday, Sept. 16, at the Loris Chamber of Commerce conference room. Present at the meeting were recreation director Tom Cocke, Jan Vescovi, Terrence Hardee and Todd Harrelson. Hardee provided the invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The meeting began with updates on the baseball and softball fields, uniforms, field conditions, All Stars and reports on the recreation website (www.Loris.Rec.com). Christmas is just around the corner and thoughts of sugar plums are dancing in the heads of Brandon Harrelson and Tom Cocke. Both are excited to present council with the possibilities of more twinkling lights and decorations to bring in visitors to Loris with hopes that visitors will come to see, eat and shop locally. Their proposal to council was to utilize the hospitality funds in the amount of $72,000 to upgrade, purchase new decorations, strands of lights and to have a visual of an animated Santa and sleigh. The Loris Police Department (LPD) is sporting a new patch on their uniforms that was designed by two students at Loris High School. Chief Gary Buley presented plaques and a certificate of appreciation for the design for the police patch on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Dakota Kielbon, a junior, and Cierra Bellamy, a senior, were recognized for their design. Loris anxiously awaited the ramifications of Hurricane Dorian with expected winds ranging from 55 to 75 mph along with the prediction of 8 to 12 inches of rain. Late night on Thursday, Sept. 5, Dorian skirted the South Carolina shores as a category 2 storm, but was gentle on the Loris area with minor wind and approximately 6 to 8 inches of rainfall. Residents of Loris were relieved when Dorian did not bring in the winds anticipated. Other than a few areas receiving power outages and a few limbs down, Loris survived without major incident. Mayor Todd Harrelson signed a Proclamation on Tuesday, Sept. 3, declaring publicly the week of Sept. 15-21 as Constitution Week. America’s Founding Fathers signed the most infamous document in American history on Sept. 17, 1787. The hydrology study has proven to be helpful in determining what the water and sewer department director, Brandon Harrelson, will focus on to prevent major flooding. Last year residents on Forest Drive were disillusioned by the devastating flooding and destruction of their properties from the back-to-back hurricanes last September. This is one of the areas of concern for the city and the recommendations made through the study should bring relief to the residents who live on Forest Drive.
