The Loris Library drew a crowd of children on Thursday, June 13, at 12 noon to make buttons for their dads for Father’s Day.  Tracy Collins provided patterns or blank circles of paper for the children to use vibrant pencils to make a colorful button.  Each child cut out the circle to fit the button, colored it and then Collins helped them to place the circle in the button maker.  There were happy faces and smiles during the event.  Dominique Lay said, “I love my daddy” as he presented his pin that said “Happy Father’s Day” Children from age three …

The Loris Chamber of Commerce held their quarterly meeting on Tuesday, June 18, from Noon to 1 p.m. at the McLeod Loris Health and Fitness Center. Samantha Norris, chamber director, welcomed everyone who came to the meeting and introduced guest speaker Wendy Gore, senior community services coordinator at Sea Haven.  Gore provided a brief background of Sea Haven and introduced the program Safe Place.  What is Safe Place?  It is a national youth outreach and prevention program for young people under the age of 18 in need of immediate help and safety.  As a collaborative community prevention initiative this program …

The residents in the city of Loris visited the polls to cast their votes for the run-off election for mayor.  On Tuesday, June 11, the East and West Precincts were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Election Commission met at the Public Safety Building at 7 p.m. awaiting the delivery of the ballots. The West Precinct was delayed stating they were having technical difficulties.  At 7:50 p.m. the delivery of all the ballots was in and Venson Powers and Melzetta Gore read the votes at 7:50 p.m. with Kenya Wright tallying the votes. The Loris Heritage Festival began at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, with vendors setting up and the young entrepreneurs set up their pop-up shops in front of Timeless Memories, Harrelson’s Clothing Store and Railroad & Main hair salon.  The Loris Chamber of Commerce discovered that the previous events and dates coincided with other festivals in the surrounding areas and chose to change the event to the first Saturday in June and to rename the festival The Loris Heritage Festival.  In 2013 the chamber had sponsors for the Loris in Bloom Festival bringing in vendors selling many springtime items and …

Serving the citizens of Loris is nothing new for veteran city councilman Michael Suggs who is seeking to become the city’s next mayor. First elected in 1993, Suggs is in his 26th year as a member of council and for 10 of those years served as mayor pro-tem, presiding over city council meetings and handling mayoral duties in the absence of the mayor. Todd Harrelson, acting mayor and mayor pro-tem, is urging registered voters to come to the polls on Tuesday, June 11, to vote in the run-off election between Mike Suggs and himself. Harrelson and Suggs were one vote shy of a tie; Harrelson received 183 votes and Suggs received 182 votes in the Tuesday, May 22, election for mayor. The Loris City Council met on Monday, June 3, at the American Legion Hall at 6 p.m. Present at the meeting were Joan Gause, Lewis Hardee, Terrence Hardee, Todd Harrelson, Mike Suggs and Jan Vescovi.  Department heads present were Damon Kempski, city administrator, Brandon Harrelson, code enforcement and public works director, Loris Police Chief Gary Buley, Kenneth Moss, city attorney, and Kenya Wright, city clerk and treasurer. The Loris mayoral election ended at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28. The candidates and family members as well as their supporters filled the seats at the Public Safety Building where the Election Committee, Venson Powers and Melzetta Gore, opened the provisional boxes, tallied the votes for each candidate and announced the absentee votes. The candidates vying for mayor for the city were Jeannie Tyler-Fox, Joan Gause, Mike Suggs and Todd Harrelson.
