The Loris Fire Department received an alert for a large brush fire in the area of Loris High School. At the same time Loris Fire Department also had another alert for a large brush fire on Highway 45 in the Live Oak Community. The Loris Fire Department, Horry County Fire Rescue, Cherry Hill Fire Department, Goretown Fire Department, Mt. Vernon Fire Department and South Carolina Forestry Commission responded to Heritage Road to find a permitted controlled land clearing fire that jumped its fire break. Todd Harrelson is running for the mayoral seat in the Special Election to be held in May. When Mayor Henry L. Nichols passed away in February the seat of mayor for the city of Loris was considered vacated. Mayor Pro-tem Todd Harrelson took over the duties as mayor of Loris. A special election to select a successor to the late Mayor Henry L. Nichols will be held on Tuesday, May 28, to fill the term of mayor until December 31, 2019. Four residents have filed with the city to be placed on the ballot for the May special election. They are: Joan Gause, council member; Todd Harrelson, council member and mayor pro tem; Michael E. Suggs, council member; and Jeannie Tyler-Fox. Joan Gause began serving the city and residents of Loris in the 1996 election for city council. A town hall style meeting was hosted by the Loris Chamber of Commerce, Jack Murphy, the Loris Recreation Center and a city official to discuss with business owners and the public the future for Loris. Speakers were Samantha Norris of the chamber, Jack Murphy of WSLC Tiger Radio, recreation director Tom Cocke and Brandon Harrelson, city code enforcement director.
