The Loris Police Department was dispatched to the BB&T Bank branch on Broad Street in the city on Thursday, Feb. 14, at approximately 1:30 p.m. The report states a light skinned black woman entered the bank telling the employees that she had a gun and demanded money. The employees never saw a weapon, but followed the instructions as the suspect took an undetermined amount of money and fled the bank on foot. The Loris High School (LHS) J.R.O.T.C. has had a busy February 2019 with the J.R.O.T.C. (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) cadets having their annual Winter Sweet Heart Ball on Saturday, Feb. 2. The attire is their dress blues with medals and cords. As they escorted their dates dressed for the ball they rocked the high school with music and dinner. On Thursday, Feb. 7, the cadets visited Loris Middle School to speak with the 8th grade class providing answers why to join the J.R.O.T.C. when they move up to high school this coming fall. The Loris City Council met on Monday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. Todd Harrelson, council member and mayor-pro tem, called the meeting to order asking Joan Gause to provide the invocation and the pledge of allegiance was recited by all. The Council members present were Joan Gause, Lewis Hardee, Terrence Hardee, Mike Suggs and Jan Vescovi. Crossway Church held its annual Critter Cooking dinner on Saturday, Feb. 4. The line was out the door at this event with more than 300 guests who came to taste the foods of the land. The menu consisted of turkey burgers, sausage, hash, lasagna, chili, beaver stew and wontons, wild turkey Brunswick stew, catfish, squirrel, rabbit and more. In previous years they have had alligator, quail and crab. This year no one had these to share. Elderberry syrup has become a popular staple in homes in the Loris area; it is used to help lessen the effects of the flu, a virus, Epstein Barr Virus and much more. The Loris Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards banquet on Thursday, Jan. 24, honoring and acknowledging residents of Loris for their contributions to the community. Members of the Loris Garden Club were warmly welcomed to the home of Laura Hardee, co-hostess with Gloria Kinney, for the January meeting. Laura’s home was lovely with Christmas decorations and vases of camellias throughout the meeting area. Delicious refreshments were served. Gardening gloves were given as favors. Laura’s beautiful arrangement, A Fresh Beginning, was in an elegant antique blue and white vase using Acuba, Yew, Spirea and Tea Olive with a variety of camellias. Lt. Robert Rudelitch, Fire Marshal and Training Coordinator, stated the LFD responded to over 1,200 calls in 2018. He said, “As for 2018, it was the busiest year for the Loris Fire Department with over 1,200 calls requiring emergency services.” The LFD responds to all calls requiring emergency services which include fire, vehicle accidents and medical calls. The report for last year’s responses has not officially been released, though Rudelitch said that report will be available soon.
