Loris First Presbyterian Church (LFPC) held its first fish fry fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. prepared to feed more than 200 people who prepaid for their tickets and held hope for more to come enjoy a meal for $8 a plate. Early risers gathered to prepare the white fish, fries and green beans. Andy Zink, a member of the church, organized the fundraiser asking volunteers to help batter the fish and fry them up for a great meal. Loris High School held their annual Senior Beta Club induction on Friday, Jan. 11, at 8 a.m. Tyneshia Fayall welcomed guests and students to the program. The LHS R.O.T.C. posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Five seniors spoke of the Keys to Success, achievement, character, leadership and service. Marie Hemphill, LHS 2019 Teacher of the Year, introduced Korbin Causey, LHS alumnus class of 2012 and vice president of Mortgage Lending at Guaranteed Rate, addressed the students congratulating them for the hard work that it takes to achieve a 3.5 – 4.0 GPA. The Mighty Lion Award is given to a teacher or support staff member each month who has gone above and beyond in their job.  A nomination is made to recognize those who go beyond their job description to help others.  Thomasena Washington was surprised to receive this award,.“I do my job and never expected to receive this award,” says Washington.  Pictured left to right are Dr. Davis, Richard Crumley, Thomasena Washington and Josh Cutright.  The program began this school year to  bring recognition and appreciation to the staff at Loris High School.

A person’s identity is one’s outward appearance as it is what others see first.  Through the ages from Samson when Delilah cut off his hair weakening his strength to now as hair makes a statement about the person.  We have seen dreadlocks, crimped, curled, straightened hairstyles and some that make a person say ‘hmmm’.  Then there are those who have lost their hair due to an illness, especially women; they will wear scarves, bandanas and slouchy snoods and wigs. Rebecca Whiznant, a senior at Loris High School, decided just before Christmas 2018 that she was going to donate her hair.  …

The Ebony Garden Club in Loris was established in 1963. They are not as well known as the Loris Garden Club, but they do their due diligence in helping make their neighborhoods a prettier place to live. Melvina Lewis is the current president of the club. She has many great ideas and plans for 2019 in helping to bring in speakers and professionals to meet with the garden club. Club members are Mayola Williams, Clara Vareen, Hattie Best, Melzetta Gore, Lutie Floyd, Brenda Brigman, Ruby Melvin, Carol Covington and Veda Nichols, with charter members Mary Swenton and Barbara Stephens. Winter Parker is a 2017 graduate of Loris High School who began studying at Coastal Carolina College majoring in Athletic Training with a double major in Psychology. All things were looking up for this 19 year old with ambitions and dreams. The dreams remain, however, delayed because of one fateful night in late April of this year when she and her boyfriend, Charles “Bo” Durant II, heard gunfire as they headed back to Bo’s parents home for dinner. Parker said, “Bo forgot his wallet at home, we were going to a movie.” She stated that he called his mother letting …

The evergreen glow with twinkling lights with gifts wrapped and set underneath. Children race to see what good old Saint Nicholas has brought them on Christmas Day. This year there were no sad faces on Christmas morning due to the hard work of three generous souls and their volunteers. Johnny Lee, the Santa at the house on the corner, worked diligently gathering gifts for Toys for Tots. His tree was filled with gifts of all sorts to be wrapped and sent to children who might not have anything under the tree. Lee volunteers for the position of Santa each year …

The Bethesda House for single mothers began only as a vision by local pastor, the Rev. Earl J Spivey Jr. He said he felt God led him to help single mothers and expectant mothers in the area. He followed the calling and retired as a pastor in 2014 after more than 20 years at the pulpit. He described the Bethesda House as a home for single mothers and parental disciple-makers, part of his Great Commission Christian Ministries. Spivey is a lifetime resident of Loris and well known for his Christian kindness and service to the community. As he settled on …

Patricia Snyder and her sister Betsy Prince are close as they have worked together for 14 years and play together. It all began with an annoying cough, preliminary diagnosis was bronchitis. When she began coughing so hard and saw fresh blood, Prince accompanied her sister to the doctor and insisted that he order an X-ray of Snyder’s chest. Prince also stated that she was rubbing her sister’s back when she felt a large lump and was concerned. The doctor immediately referred Snyder to an oncologist. After a thorough examination by Dr. Stewart Sharp, an oncologist in Little River, Snyder was …
