A social media post with threats of a ‘killing spree’ naming five Horry County high schools was brought to the attention of the district office who took immediate action following protocol. The district posted to their Facebook page and each individual school Facebook page that they were aware of the threat on Wednesday evening, Dec. 19. The four named schools were Aynor, Carolina Forest, Conway, Green Sea Floyds and Loris. The Snapchat post by a person called “Kevin Gates” stated that the Ku Klux Klan would be going on a killing spree warning students, “so tell you’re people don’t go!!!!!!” …

Loris First Baptist Church, ‘A Live Walk-Through Nativity’, cast members in the city of Bethlehem. Visitors traveled through time to more than 2,000 years ago at Loris First Baptist Church from Friday, Dec. 14, through Sunday, Dec. 16. Beginning at 6 p.m. a guide asks prayers then takes a group of 30 through the live outdoor walk-through stepping on a hay path where the group is led to the field where the shepherds watch their flock of sheep. The guide explains in scripture and script that an angel appeared to the shepherds to give the good news of Christ’s birth. …

The D.E.C.A. (Distributive Education Clubs of America) traveled to West Ashley High School to participate in the Regional Role Play Competition. LeAundra Gore placed first in Accounting, Chukeya Williams placed third in Entrepreneurship and Mia Delgado-Naredo and Ja’Maya Jackson placed in the top 10 in Hotels & Lodging Management. The D.E.C.A. students will travel to Charleston in March to compete in the state level in their respective categories.

The beginning of a community outreach program, God’s Gifts, began in 2012 by one strong Christian lady, Stella McDowell. The purpose of the program is to provide Christmas to teenagers between the ages of 13 to 18, both girls and boys. McDowell said that she was given the idea in 2011 when her sister was jailed and released to move to South Carolina to be closer to family. She had to find her sister a place to stay; she realized they needed furniture and household items as well as clothing along with cleaning and hygienic supplies. McDowell was able to …

Loris Garden Club members contribute to the Giving Hope Nursery. Some Club members began their 2018-19 members in September with Buck Creek Foundation Board officers Lori Suggs and Dale Holt presenting a program about the Giving Hope Nursery project. This non-profit group specializes in fostering independence in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, such as autism. The previous Clardy Nursery is being revitalized into a business with the goals of providing jobs and training for those individuals growing and selling organic produce to area restaurants and the public. The Loris Chamber of Commerce and city employees worked diligently preparing for the 2018 Loris Christmas parade that was held on Friday, Nov. 30, beginning at 4 p.m. [smartslider3 slider=2]   To begin the festivities Santa and Mrs. Claus were ready and waiting to visit with children of all ages to listen to their Christmas wish lists at the Courtyard on Main in front of the Christmas tree. The Loris Chamber of Commerce and the City of Loris workers have been busy preparing the Courtyard on Main for the upcoming Christmas festivities. The city will hold its annual Christmas kickoff on Friday, Nov. 30, at 4 p.m. with a variety of entertainers singing. Santa will be on hand to talk with all the children. The official tree lighting ceremony will take place at 6 p.m.
