The North Myrtle Beach High School varsity soccer team won the boys portion of the Michael B. Nash Soccer Tournament this past weekend at the city of North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. The Chiefs beat Carolina Forest 3-2, Conway 4-0 and then beat Socastee to win the championship. The Lady Chiefs opened the tournament with a 7-0 win over Conway but lost to Socastee and St. James by identical 3-2 scores. Jeri Lorraine McCumbee was born and raised in Horry County and graduated from Green Sea Floyds High School. She is the daughter of Toni Phillips and Bobby McCumbee. She grew up in the farming world of tobacco, a major crop when she was a child. After graduation, she attended Spartanburg Methodist College. There was no keeping the salt out of her hair, so she returned to the coast. Of course, the only jobs for young people on the beach in the 80’s were the tourist and restaurant industries. The North Myrtle Beach City Council held its fiscal year 2021 budget retreat meeting Feb. 24-25 at Santee Cooper’s Wampee Conference Center in Pinopolis which was open to the public. The city’s fiscal year is July 1-June 30. The proposed budget involves 17 separate funds with significant interrelations and transfers between the various funds. The proposed FY 2021 budget is about $119 million, an increase of about $27 million over the FY 2020 budget. The budget proposes a property tax increase of about 7.9 mils, most of which would go toward funding an expansion of the North Myrtle Beach Park …

The 9th Annual Wigs for Cancer Gala, hosted by Marlisa Small, was held last Saturday at the Hilton on Beach Club Drive in Myrtle Beach. Five hundred people were in attendance. On June 2, 1996, 23-year-old Shawn Marie Neal was found deceased in a condominium at 3217 South Ocean Boulevard in North Myrtle Beach. An indepth investigation was undertaken by the North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety (NMBDPS) with assistance from the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Despite the investigators’ best efforts, the case went “cold” and remained unsolved. In November 2017, relying on advances in investigative technology that include DNA collection and cataloging, NMBDPS investigators reopened the Neal investigation.
