Jammie Livingston is still farming at 87 years old. He is better known in the community as Sonny Livingston, one of the biggest farmers in the Wampee section of Horry County. He farmed acreage of crops for over 6 decades but now he is farming his yard such as peppers, okras, a variety of teas, collards and a lemon tree. His biggest accomplishment for this year has been his first ever lemon tree which the lemons grew as large as navel oranges plus collard leaves as long as 41 inches. During the December 16 City Council meeting, Employee of the Month Awards were presented to Public Grounds Maintenance Worker Stewart Stevenson (September), Senior Planner/Urban Designer Suzanne Pritchard (October) and Seasonal Beach Cleaner Contrez Dewitt and Motor Equipment Operator Kareem Hemingway (November). Stewart Stevenson received his award for volunteering to be the point of contact for the Right of Way Crew when its leader had to be out of work for an extended period of time. The North Myrtle Beach City Council held a Monday, December 16, meeting in City Council chambers at City Hall. City Council adopted a resolution approving a settlement agreement in principle between the City of Myrtle Beach and Horry County regarding hospitality fees and authorized the city manager to sign the document(s) on behalf of the city. For the past decade, Driftwood Garden Club has enjoyed its role in the city- sponsored free Christmas wreath-making workshop.  This year the workshop was held on Thursday, Dec 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center.  The North Myrtle Beach Department of Parks and Recreation supplied the fresh greenery and working tools and club members provided instruction and encouragement to the more than 100 in attendance.  Everyone left the free workshop smelling of pine, big smiles and with a sense of both accomplishment and pride in having made their own wreaths or other holiday floral …

Driftwood celebrated Arbor Day 2019 on Friday, Dec. 6, with its planting of two Cercis Canadensis Forest Pansy trees, which helped further define and enhance the beauty of the special plot of land at the Club’s most recently installed Blue Star Memorial Marker in the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex.  Driftwood and the city of North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Department have long partnered in celebrating Arbor Day.  The club Arbor Day committee chairman discussed options for planting and types of trees with the parks superintendent and then held a joint meeting to finalize details at the …

The McLeod Loris Angels, a women’s healthcare philanthropy group, benefitting McLeod Health Loris, granted $880 raised by members of the association. This funding will go toward departmental improvements and provide additional support for patients and community. The grants will provide funding for the labor and delivery unit to purchase a mamaRoo infant seat to help calm babies born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). According to the Centers of Disease Control, six out of every 1,000 babies in the U.S. are diagnosed with NAS.
