The Rotary Club of Little River has joined the movement to establish little free libraries in our community.  Hopefully, these libraries will place literature close to people who don’t have easy access to larger facilities. The first little library in Little River was installed at Wampee United Methodist Church on Highway 90.  It was a collaborative effort by the Rotary Club, the church and the Boy Scouts.  Several Rotarians, church members, scouts and parents pitched in to install the facility.  The library is available to all.  The idea is to take something and replace it with something else and keep …

The city of North Myrtle Beach recognized Coach Joe Lategano on July 31 for his years of dedication to parks and recreation activities. A basketball court at the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center is now known as Joe Lategano Court. Coach Joe began volunteering with the North Myrtle Beach Parks & Recreation Department in 1993. He organized and conducted the “Summer Slam” basketball camp each summer for more than a decade. More than 500 children participated in this free basketball camp. The North Myrtle Beach Tree City Board used its August Tree of the Month Award to highlight a pair of Cleveland Pears planted in the right-of-way along 9th Avenue South. The trees were planted about 15 years ago as part of an Ocean Oaks Community beautification project. They are healthy and happy in their location. The Cleveland Pear tree is often mistaken for the Bradford pear tree. The Cleveland Pear is a rapid grower but a bit smaller than the Bradford pear, reaching 30 to 40 feet high and 15 feet wide at maturity, while the Bradford pear grows more …

Rep. William Bailey (SC House District 104) has been very busy since taking office earlier this year. One of the big things keeping Bailey busy right now is his work with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) in regards to making travel through Little River much safer. Due to the frequency of accidents resulting in injury, Bailey is lobbying for changes between Baldwin Avenue and Magnolia Avenue. “In between Baldwin and Magnolia, people have a tendency to get into the median and use it as a travel lane,” said Bailey. “This has resulted in numerous sideswipe and rear-end accidents …

Salvation Army Captain Carl Melton and Jerry Williams, director of community relations, brought three pallets of school supplies to city hall on Monday, July 29, at 2 p.m. The ladies who created and promoted this program, Amanda Hawley-Causey, Deborah Cannon, Jenna Winborne and Tonsheka Wilson, are overjoyed with the donations they have received during the three week campaign to collect school supplies for needy children in the area.  When the Salvation Army arrived with three pallets of school supplies, they were overwhelmed with emotion at the amount of items donated. The North Myrtle Beach Planning Commission will hold a special workshop on Friday, July 26, at 2 p.m., at City Hall to discuss Annexation & Zoning Designation ANZ‐19‐01 involving a petition to annex lands currently occupied by the Possum Trot Golf Course and zone those lands Planned Development District (PDD) with the creation of the Tidal Walk PDD. This item was tabled by the Planning Commission at its regular meeting on July 16 and is also scheduled for the Planning Commission’s August 6 meeting agenda.

Kenedi Board, Young Miss Teen North Myrtle Beach, recently donated a collection of small toys, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other dental care supplies to Miles for Smiles, the school dental program based in Horry County.  Miles for Smiles began operation in 2004 by Little River Medical Center and now provides dental services to 26 schools in Horry County.  Assisting Ms. Board was Ashby Grace Reeves, Little Miss Horry County, and Easlyn Hall, Wee Miss North Myrtle Beach.
