Lions Club International recognized Lion Watson for this award for  his demonstrating active commitment to the growth and strength of the association.   Lion Watson was one of the original charter members  of the Little River Lions Club.

On Saturday, Aug. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Harbourgate Marina in North Myrtle Beach, Freedom Boat Club is doing a BBQ with all the trimmings including dessert, soda and water.  Entertainment will include local band, Atomic Potion, and The Aloha Experience Hula Dancers and Fire Breathers. In March 2019, the Horry County Solid Waste Authority announced the creation of a new recognition program. The Spotlight on Environmental Awareness (SEA) program will recognize agencies/businesses/companies that practice reducing, reusing and recycling in their daily operations, promote the conservation of natural resources and/or utilizes sustainable business practices. Two to three businesses will be recognized quarterly on the SWA website and social media platforms and will include a brief summary of the recipient’s environmental efforts and a link to their specific website. South Carolina has announced dates for the 2019 sales tax holiday weekend. Shoppers can buy a large variety of back to school items without paying the state’s 6 percent sales tax and many local taxes during the tax free weekend which will begin on Friday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 4. Items such as school supplies, computers, clothing, footwear and certain bed and bath items will be tax exempt. In past years, consumers have saved between two million and three million dollars during the tax free weekend holiday.

McLeod Loris Seacoast has benefited with the extra help of teen volunteers this summer. These students have been given the opportunity to interact with patients and healthcare professionals to learn firsthand how the McLeod Health system operates. Some of the volunteer duties include performing clerical support, helping new patients get oriented at the information desk, making deliveries and assisting with special events. Many of these students have an interest in health-related careers. North Myrtle Beach High School has a new principal, although she’s actually been a part of the school for 25 years. Former assistant principal Teresa Todd replaces Trevor Strawderman who left to move to Charleston after a decade-long and illustrious stint at the school. Todd started at the school as a math teacher for 13 years followed by becoming an instructional coach for four, then assistant principal since then, so she has a long view. “We’re at a good place,’’ Todd said. “We want to continue moving forward.’’ Strawderman was known not only for his community involvement but as a …

Three city leaders attended the annual Municipal Association of South Carolina Conference that was held on Thursday, July 18, through Sunday, July 21, in Greenville.  Mayor Todd Harrelson, Councilwoman Joan Gause and Loris City Clerk and Treasurer Kenya Wright attended meetings with other municipalities from South Carolina to discuss topics ranging from strategic planning, social media, opportunity zones, economic development and public safety. There was an exhibitor showcase featuring goods and services for operating a city successfully. The conference provides information to elected officials and city employees to bring back to share with the city council and the city offices. …

Main Street paving has been completed including painting the lines and arrows. This crew continued painting the turn lane at Main and Broad Street during the early evening thunderstorm that hit Loris on Tuesday, July 23. When asked these dedicated workers if they stop when there is lightning, the workers said they work rain or shine to complete their work.
