KAB Kids Junior Garden Club Winners at State Youth Symposium

By Sharon Robinson Three Riverside Elementary School members of the Driftwood Keep America Beautiful (KAB) Kids Junior Garden Club received awards from the Garden Club of South Carolina (GSCS) at the 2019 State Youth Symposium held on April 6 at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia.  Yvette Otero, a fifth grader, won first place for her poster of Smokey Bear “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires”. Eva Campman, a fourth grader, won honorable mention in the same category.  In the Woodsy Owl “Lend a Hand, Care for the Land” poster competition, Kh’ Mya Watts, a fourth grader, won second Place. Ordinance Creates Overlay District for Activity Centers

Prior to the April 15 North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, Council members met in executive session for a legal briefing regarding Code of Laws of South Carolina, Section 57-9-10. Council took no action. During the April 15 meeting, Mayor Marilyn Hatley presented a Proclamation naming April 2019 as National Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Month. She called on citizens to dedicate themselves to the task of improving quality of life for all children and families. Dunes supporters host Monday Potluck Picnic

Residents filled City Hall Monday night in support of the city of North Myrtle Beach’s effort to purchase and preserve Ingram Dunes. As Morgan Livingston, a third-generation native of North Myrtle Beach, expressed the need for purchase and preservation of the historic 9.4-acre site, he asked all those in attendance who endorse saving Ingram Dunes to stand. Almost the entire room rose in support, with the exception of the city staff. It was a moving tribute to the continued encouragement from the community for the effort to save Ingram Dunes. Barefoot Landing submits first application for a Festival Zone

Prior to the April 1 North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, Council members met in executive session to discuss an appointment to the Board of Zoning Appeals. Council also received a legal briefing on a proposed Common Interest and Confidentiality Agreement between the City of Myrtle Beach and the City of North Myrtle Beach, a proposed confidentiality agreement between municipalities and Horry County regarding I-73, the Maritime parking lot and property acquisitions. Pence visits beach area on behalf of Senator Graham

The North Myrtle Beach High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Trainning Corps unit met Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday, March 30, 2019. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the 13 cadets who travelled to Myrtle Beach International Airport to greet the vice president. The cadets and chaperones were escorted to the front of the security lines by the coordinator of the vice presidential motorcade and were put in the most ideal spot for shaking his hand when Pence landed on the tarmac. Cherry Grove ranks in top U.S. beaches

A lot of positive media attention has landed on North Myrtle Beach recently, from Cherry Grove being the only Horry County beach in TripAdvisor’s top 25 United States beaches, coming in at 11th, to a number seven “safest city’’ ranking out of nearly 7,600 in the state analyzed by Alarms.com. My column this week is from the book of John, chapter 19, about Jesus’ crucifixion. Pilate handed Jesus over to the Jews to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
