Susan Elizabeth Rhodes

Susan Elizabeth Rhodes was born on Dec. 4, 1951, in Lincolnton, N.C., to Robert Wilson and Helen Beam Rhodes. On Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, surrounded by loving family, Susan began her new life in heaven after waging a two-and-a-half-year courageous bout with pancreatic cancer. Susan was a warrior princess throughout her life. Her strength and generosity touched so many lives and we will always remember her legacy of love and happiness. She graduated from Lincolnton High School, attended Lenior-Rhyne University and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in English and her Juris Doctor. …

Grace Letha Gipe Elson

Grace Letha Gipe Elson, 95, widow of William Owens Elson, died on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, at her home. Born on Nov. 25, 1923, in Fort Collins, Col., she was a daughter of the late Guilford Gipe and the late Dopha Alzada Hamill Gipe. She graduated from C.K. McClatchy High School and a secretarial college in Sacramento, Calif., and went on to work as a secretary at Mather Field for the Army Air Corps during World War II. Arlene R. Kohler was born on Oct. 3, 1927 and passed away on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, in North Myrtle Beach. She was born in Berks County, Pa. Arlene was a daughter of Clarence T. Trupe and Roberta (Eberly) Trupe and the widow of Joseph Kohler Sr.She retired from Bass Pro Shops in Myrtle Beach. Surviving are two brothers, two sons, one step-daughter, 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and too many people who called her mom or grandmom to count. Jerry Waide Tanner

Jerry Waide Tanner, 68, of North Myrtle Beach died on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born on Sept. 19, 1950, in Gassaway, W.Va., he was the son of Russell Waide and Juanita Raider Tanner. Jerry enjoyed playing the banjo, mandolin and guitar. He was a member of Monks Choir, a Christian band, for 10 years. Jerry and his wife, Janet, who he married 20 years ago, enjoyed boating and fishing, especially with their grandsons. Luther M. Rabon, 69, of Marion passed away on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019. Mr. Rabon was born in Conway, a son of the late Donnie A. and Estelle G. Rabon. He was a member of Marion Baptist Church and the Oak Tree Sunday School Class. Avery Leroy “Lee” Howard, 81, of Graham, N.C., formerly of Hillsborough, N.C., died peacefully at his home on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019. Mr. Howard was a native of Cleveland County and retired from Blythe Construction as a highway superintendent. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Jessie Howard. Cornelia Ussery Blackwell, 96, of Albemarle, N.C., passed away on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019, in CHS-Stanly. Born on Aug. 25, 1922, in Richmond County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late William Thomas Ussery and Cornia Smith Ussery and was a retired employee of the American Efird Mill Company. Major John Robert Shea, USMC (Ret.) 99 and one-half years old, has gone to join his Lord and his wife, Lorena Smith Shea, of 54 years. “The Major,” as he was respectfully known by all who knew him, passed on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019.
