The city of North Myrtle Beach Parks & Recreation will hold a naming and dedication ceremony for the Joe Lategano Court located at the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center on Possum Trot Road on Wednesday, July 31 at 5:30 p.m. Coach Joe Lategano will be recognized for his many years as a coach, mentor and supporter of North Myrtle Beach Parks & Recreation. Coach Joe currently serves as the chairman of the Recreation Commission. All past players, coaches and supporters are invited to the ceremony to celebrate Coach Joe Lategano.

South Carolina deer hunters should start seeing deer tags for the 2019 season in their mailboxes soon, and there are significant changes to the antlerless tagging system that all hunters need to be aware of before taking to the field. New for this year are improvements to the Antlerless Deer Tag program. Three North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Department all-star teams continued play this week in the Dixie Youth Baseball Championship tournaments being held around the state. The 10 and under all-stars, who were seeded 11th in the 12-team event, started play last weekend with a 7-4 win over the sixth seeded team from Orangeburg. North Myrtle Beach then took on the 5th seeded Hartsville team, and lost by a 2-0 score. The North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Department 7-8 year old machine pitch all-star team lost their first two games at the state Dixie Youth tournament in Florence over the weekend and were eliminated from the tournament. North Myrtle Beach first lost to the Bluffton Nationals squad by a 10-1 score and then lost their game in the losers bracket, as Saluda beat them 10-0. Four North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Department all star teams have successfully advanced to the state Dixie Youth championship. The 7-8 year-old boys team is the first squad to begin their quest for a title as they travel to Florence to begin play in a twelve team double elimination tournament. Their first game is at 9 a.m. this Saturday and if they win (or lose) they can advance to the championship game which probably will occur next Thursday. All proceeds from the event will go toward the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund was established by the family of Johnny L. Causey Sr. to honor his memory.
