The 2019 spring baseball and softball all stars are in full swing for the city of North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation department. Six teams are representing NMB in their respective district tournaments over the next couple of weeks in hopes of making it to the state tournaments. These indviduals were chosen as top players in their league by the coaches to represent the city of North Myrtle Beach. Noted conservationist and Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris is challenging families everywhere to put down their digital devices and head outside to discover the joys of fishing this summer. Morris, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s are donating more than 55,000 rods and reels to not-for-profit partners that help kids from all backgrounds connect to the great outdoors to kick off Gone Fishing. The nationwide movement is part of an annual call-to-action that aims to introduce the sport to millions of kids. Registration is now open for the North Myrtle Beach Parks & Recreation Summer Sports Camps. The department has partnered with North Myrtle Beach High School to offer a variety of specialty sports camps all summer long. These camps are for youth that have skills in a particular sport that they want to be refined or those looking to try a new sport. The 2019 Summer Sports Camps offered include Chiefs Tennis Camp (June 13-15; 1st grade – 8th grade), Chiefs Lacrosse Camp (June 24-28 and July 8-12; ages 7-15), Surf & Turf Soccer Camp (July 9-12; ages 5-12), Chiefs Girls …

America’s Boating Course, a boating safety class, will be offered by America’s Boating Club, also known as the North Strand Sail & Power Squadron.  Most vessel insurance companies offer a discount to boaters who have successfully completed this course, The class will take place on Saturday, June 22.  It will begin at 8 a.m. and run until about 5 p.m.  The cost is $40 for members and $65 for non-members.   It includes a textbook.  Additional family members pay $20 and share the book.  A light breakfast and delicious lunch will be served for no additional fee. The North Myrtle Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC) and the Grand Strand Masters Swim Team offer free beginner swim lessons for adults and children ages five and older June 3-6 at the AFC. Classes are 5:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Preregistration is required and available at the AFC at 1100 Second Avenue South beginning on May 13. There are more than 18 million swimming pools and hot tubs in the United States. While sitting on the metal bleachers last week watching my grandson play his last tee-ball game of the season I thought about my kids playing at the Central Park tee-ball field many years ago. The similarities included watching the kids try their best to concentrate on the game while ignoring the grass or dirt that called for them to sit down.
