By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs football team finished their shortened 2020 regular season with an impressive 34-6 win over the visiting Myrtle Beach Seahawks in their final regular season game at The Hank Hester Sports Complex last Friday evening. By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs returned to the Hank Hester Field for Homecoming last Friday night and beat the visiting Knights 28-21 to remain undefeated atop the 6AAAA region. The Chiefs win and the upset win by Wilson over Myrtle Beach on Friday now sets up the big game with the Seahawks a week from Friday at North Myrtle Beach. By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach High School varsity girls cross country team won the 6AAAA regional championship last Saturday in Darlington.  The girls team had three runners in the top ten finishers to win with 59 points. West Florence was second with 75 points and Myrtle Beach third with 80 points. Kailyn Brown was the fourth-place finisher overall with Kayah Marques seventh, Isabel Smith 11th, Nia Ortiz 13th and Chandler Mury Riley 26th to lead the Chiefs point-getters. By John Smithson The fifth ranked North Myrtle Beach Chiefs started slowly last Friday night but then dismantled the Darlington Falcons by a 63-14 score.  The Chiefs and Falcons traded possessions for most of the first quarter until a Darlington touchdown seemed to spark the Chiefs and got their offense going for the rest of the Friday homecoming game at Darlington High School. By John Smithson North Myrtle Beach’s Jacob Koontz was the top finisher in the boys varsity race in the Horry County Cross Country Championships held last Wednesday at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex. Koontz’s time of 16:01.56 beat second place finisher Kaden Buchler(16:13.69), whose team finished in five of the top seven positions to win the boys varsity event. Carolina Forest was first with an average time of 17:13.52, followed by St James (17:32.52), Myrtle Beach (18:32.88), Socastee, Aynor and Green Sea Floyds. Prior to kick-off the LHS seniors who are football players, cheerleaders or band members were recognized on the field accompanied by their parents or family members. This is a priviledge for the seniors to shine for their accomplishments from kindergarten to 12th grade. The Chiefs followed up their big win at Darlington last week with another solid team performance on both offense and defense to send the visiting Bruins home with their second loss, in their first game played against North Myrtle Beach. The teams consisted of 8U to 14U and two high school teams. The teams wore pink in support of breast cancer awareness month. The team Revolutions was a hard hitting and strong willed team consisting of 10 players and two coaches. The Chiefs teams finished first and second in a four-team meet last Wednesday at North Myrtle Beach, then travelled to West Florence High School for the Pee Dee Classic on Saturday where the boys finished sixth and the girls took third in team standings. High school sports had already been dealt a bad hand when spring sports were cancelled early last March due to the many unknowns surrounding COVID-19. As schools cancelled classes for the year, disappointed athletes in all sports waited to see what might happen in the fall. During the summer North Myrtle Beach High School fall sports teams waited and watched to see what the South Carolina High School League would do.
